We're just taking off for our first nights destination at Clines Corners, NM.
I went back through the thread and took notes on everything that was recommended. I'll let everyone know how it went when we return on the 16th. We really appreciate all the ideas.
Thanks: Charlie

Here's a recent shot of a friend of ours out of Dallas on one of his peregrinations. The boy has been runnin' the roads since the '60's on what are now antique motorcycles and is a fount of knowledge about the kind of trip you're taking. His European buddies keep him busy as to these kind of questions. (And he'd tell you that Nat King Cole's version of "Route 66" is the one that swings).

Be sure to ask around as you travel.

If you can see your way to getting to San Antonio (NM) and having lunch or dinner at the Owl Cafe (green chili cheeseburgers and fries) you will not be disappointed. I would travel hours out of my way to get back there. Don't expect nice, just great food!

El Rancho in Gallup is famous and well worth a trip. In Albuquerque there's both the Route 66 Diner and the Route 66 Malt Shop.

I hope Charlie brought a computer and can read posts now and keep us up to date with his trip.

I'm glad Bruno posted the photo of El Rancho. It's a funky old hotel once frequented by Hollywood stars and has been kept up pretty well. I believe it's on the east side of town on old 66.

I recommend Williams, AZ. We camped at a KOA there and took the train to the Grand Canyon. They actually stage a robbery on the way back. There's a nice Mexican restaurant in Williams, plenty of nostalgic diners and some fun shopping. I'd recommend avoiding Hop Sing's Chinese Grill, though-- probably the worst food and service ever. All in all, Williams was a great Route 66 experience.
