Between Oatman and Kingman
Having only driven the road in 2007, I not sure that it is the best road for an Airstream. Very tight corners, steep in places, and at that time in dyer need of paving. Apparently it has been neglected for too many years.
But here is one of the happy spots. And I just found a road picture.

peewee, great photos. They do capture the essence of the road including the bad pavement. I don't think Charlie's going that far west, but he has an almost one of a kind trailer that may be less than 8' wide, so he would fare better than the widebodies of today. That section of 66 is probably one of the most genuine examples of the early days of the highway, after it was paved.

What an awesome memory! You should drive it again or have your kids take you....

Prescott, AZ
A primer if you visit Prescott. Prescott is pronounced Press-kit, it rhymes with biscuit.
Foreigners are recognized immediately when the utter the dreaded "scott" ending.
Welcome to the Arizona high country...5300 feet above sea level, 15 20 degrees cooler than the Valley of the Sun.

Pewee thanks for posting all the pics. We plan on making a loop out of the trip by going home through Monument Valley then up through Telluride and back to I 70. I don't see us towing any farther west then Cave Springs state park by Oak Creek canyon but we may make a day trip a littler further down rt. 66 while we're docked there. We want to spend some time hiking in the park and taking the boys down the slide rock natural water slides. We all really want to see Oatman but it's another 3.5 hours west so it is doubtful that we make it. I'm thinking that Seligman is about as far as we can push it but we'll see.
I'm hoping for a break in the weather so I can apply the final coat of liquid glass tomorrow after work. We've had almost nothing but rain, sleet, and hail for the past 2 weeks including today. Even on Thursday when I polished it was intermittently spitting rain throughout the day. I can't wait to try the LEDs while camping to see how they effect the batteries. Thanks to Gene for his advise on these. I'll give a complete update on that thread once I get the second set of lights installed.
Thanks: Charlie

Seligman is pronounced Sligman by locals we were told.
In Prescott, where we probably announced ourselves as touristas, we stayed several years back at the Hassayampa Hotel. We had what might be called the bridal suite because, as the story goes, a young newly married couple checked in. The groom went out to get something and never came back. The bride waited for days, maybe weeks, but no groom. This room has a balcony and from the balcony, there is a ladder leading up to the roof. One morning they found the bride—she had hanged herself from some part of the roof. We did not experience her ghost as others are said to have. We did have a good breakfast in the hotel restaurant though. So, if you want to forsake your trailer for one night and let the kids run riot in it, try out the bridal suite at the Hassayampa. The hotel comes with an old, creaky elevator too, is real close to the town square and some good restaurants.

If anyone is planning on travelling the Mother Road in the near future, there will be an article in the next issue of Airstream Life.
Airstream Life is a great resource for all kinds of stuff.

Check out Rich Charpentier's pics & blog
Rich, aka gadgetat, who lives in his Airstream in Prescott has a cool collection of photos along Route 66 at R.L. Charpentier Photography.
Also, check out his blog for places in and around Route 66 starting at The Airstream Chronicles Continued › Route 66.
Rich's photos are processed from HDR images that create a style and look that seems to evoke the heat and somewhat surreal nature of the West. If you stop in Prescott, be sure an visit Rich at the Ian Russell Gallery ( IanRussellArt.com ). Great stuff.

Check out Meteor Crater...
You'll find Meteor Crater along I-40 between Flagstaff and Winslow. There is an excellent campground just off the highway and there are old sections of Route 66 that you can walk adjacent to the campground. When Rosemary and I walked along there one morning, we were passed by 4 Pronghorn Antelope speeding down the road. They passed us on both sides. Amazing.
Meteor Crater has a private museum that has exceptional exhibits and is well worth a visit. Sure, it's a big hole in the ground, but the education that you get about it is first rate.

Great pics, Pee Wee and everyone! I feel like I'm getting the grand tour. One day I would love to get out there and see what's left of the old mother road for real.

Charlie, it's time to quit your job and go from one end of 66 to the other and then go back.

That thought crosses my mind every year. I just need to win a small jackpot for our lifestyle. I'd love to at least take a full summer off while my youngest is still in school. As things are we still get about 40 nights a year in the Airstream, they're just broken up in vacation blocks, and non-holiday weekends.
On another subject, what about a great dining suggestion for the trip. My wife bought the 3 disk dvd set of Rt. 66 with Michael Wallis. Most of the footage is of him eating in diners along the road. I think the filming was done about 4-5 years apart for each dvd and he looks to step up about 50 lbs. in each one. We eat very healthy when we travel in the Airstream and prefer to grill outside anyway, but we'll allow at least one break from that at a calorie free diner or old restaurant along the way. Any suggestions?

My post about some restaurants disappeared as well as a bunch of photos by others. Charlie's post about posts disappearing has also disappeared.
Restaurants: La Posada has been mentioned. Supposed to be best restaurant in Williams. Goes under the fine dining category. To see the hotel as it should be seen, walk down to the RR tracks. It was designed to be seen that way rather than from the road as it was a RR hotel.
In Flagstaff, for healthy food, Moonrise Oasis, 11 E. Aspen Ave. It's right downtown off of old 66. Streets are narrow there, so park the trailer along 66 or at a campground.

Well it's raining right now and snow is in the forecast for today. All I need is that 2 hour window to apply the liquid glass before all of my polishing is for nothing. The desert is sounding better every day. I can't wait to get out of this. This is the place to be from July through Sept. but we pay for it.
