Place to camp near Chicago?

Anyone have suggestions of where to camp near Chicago? Has anyone stayed at Illinois Beach State Park just north of Chicago?

How close do you want to be? We LOVE Illini State Park in Marseilles, IL. It's probably a 1 1/2 hour drive to Chicago. The sites in the Great Falls part of the park are right on the Illinois River. Sites 3-8 are high ground and beautiful. This park is about 20 minutes from our house. We traveled the U.S. last year for 9 months, and this park is second to none. We would only consider the river sites in the Great Falls part of the park. If you're looking for a park to see the sites of Chicago, this might be too far away for you.

We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park and rode the South Shore Line RR to and from Chicago. There is a station at the park.

Inexpensive and an easy way to visit Chicago without trying to park my truck.

We have camped there many times. WBCCI rallies there frequently. There is train stop nearby, if you want to visit Chicago, but do not like to drive in heavy traffic. It has a nice beach but Lake Michigan is cold this time of year. There is also a nice lodge, if you want to eat out.

Indiana dunes state park is a very nice park we camp there a lot . A new option is the cook county forest preserves. Last year they built several camp grounds around the Chicago area some with rv hook ups. Google cook county forest preserves for mor info

I camped a week at Illinois Beach State Park over Labor Day weekend 1997.
It is a very nice park close to attractions.

If you want to be IN DOWNTOWN, google the Chicago Marshaling lot. Basically, a $20+/- per night secure parking lot right downtown.

A drivers lounge is there, otherwise boondocking.

It's on my bucket list.

I have camped there several times. It is the place to camp, if you don't want to be REAL CLOSE to Chicago.

In the summer of 2015 Cook County Forest Preserves built several new campgrounds right outside Chicago and a few have electric sites.

I haven't personally been yet but have two weekends booked at Bullfrog Lake coming up, it's supposed to be the best one.
