there are some strange holidays but except for columbus day, not a lot right now,
are u thinking toward turkey day?
i agree the city parks are a great find, and each of the small towns near by have them.
for 1 nite/passing through they are nice/quiet finds.
there are several private rv parks, old poorly maintained and some with full timers...
look in woodalls or the good sam book, most won't be online.
this is a strangely interesting area with the mining history,
it's a typical coal-EXcoal miners, economically depressed area going back generations.
lots of middle european and military stuff from the days of forts and calvary.
the buster keaton film festival in iola
is pretty cool...
THAT would be a fun time and place for a rally
almost every one of the towns ON the map in that area
have city parks with a few camping sites,
and there are a couple of fairgrounds with camping too.
almost ALL of that stuff will be vacant.
pittsburg being the ah, urban center and college town has the most options...
i doubt the locals fuzz would object to a few nights of driveway camping in town.
don't forget to go for fried chicken (mary's OR annies)
and the diner/dive 'cafe on the route' in baxter springs...
there are some other unique eating options in the fried chicken capital o'the world.
