Palm Desert, CA

Does anyone have suggestions on where to camp in Palm Desert, CA? I'll be driving through in late June.

Thanks!

Not really...been thru there a thousand times. It looks like they have a lot to offer boondocking all the way up to Palm Springs glamping. Good luck!

Can't help with campgrounds, but if you're there for a little bit, several things to do there that are interesting, including hiking Palm Canyon (in the middle of the desert, there is this canyon with a river running through it, lined with palm trees!), taking the aerial tram up to the mountain top snow in Palm Springs, and visiting Joshua Tree. But it does get warm there!

One that you should take off your list is "Palm Springs Oasis" on the corner of Date Palm and Gerald Ford. It amounts to a concrete parking lot. The exact opposite of an oasis.

Since you will be driving through the middle of the desert in late June with 102 degree heat...check out Emerald Desert RV...lots of shade trees and grass and swimming pools. Would be a very cool stop over for a night or two...high-end glamping Prevost style...highly rated. About $50 per night during summer.

If you want a break from your own rig check out http://hicksville.com/ in Joshua Tree.

FYI... Weather statistics indicate the Palm Desert daytime highs are 100-105 in june (record high was 122), but the evenings cool off quite a bit (down to 65-70).

What is your final destination? If your travel plans allow, you may wish to select a more northerly route, where it's higher in altitude and cooler.

For example, if you are headed anywhere north of LA, Tehachapi is a great overnight stop in the mountains, and temperatures in June are typically 80/55. I-40 west to Hwy-58 will get you to the north side of the Grapevine on I-5 or Hwy-99 (in Bakersfield), and Hwy-58 goes right through Tehachapi.

Thanks, Phoenix. My final destination is Kansas City, MO. We drove the northern route to San Francisco, CA last July, so we thought we'd try the southern route for our return. I'm not looking forward to the hot, hot heat. Looks like we'll be staying at RV Parks where we can hook up the AC.

Again, thanks for your feedback!
