Page AZ...Antelope Canyon

Just got in from a trip to Page AZ.
Stayed at the Page Campground on Coppermine Rd....nice folks.

While there we did Lower Antelope Canyon and got some nice shots with the camera.










Still working on the editing in photoshop.

Also did a day trip to the North Rim, and into the Grand Staircase Escalante in search of unusual rock formations such as toadstools and hoodoos.

Met "phoenix" and his bride who were boondocking with their grandaughters at Lone Rock Beach on Lake Powell. Great time visiting with another Airstreamer.

Cool! I've always wanted to visit Antelope Canyon, but we were in Page for such a brief time that we didn't get to it. Methinks we need to stay longer.

We stayed at that same park where you stayed. Maria liked it because of the swimming pool, but I'm thinking maybe we'll stay over at Wahweap campground by the lake next time. It looked pretty nice from the brief drive-through that we did. (And Maria can go jump in the lake if she wants to get wet.)

These images are from Lower Antelope Canyon. Lower AC requires more physical ability than Upper Antelope, which is across the road. Lower AC requires descending ladders into the slot canyon, and continued scrambling down ladders and rocks for the length of the slot, then climbing a ladder out for the trail back to the parking lot. It is also a little longer than Upper Antelope. The Navajo fee was $26 a head.
Upper Antelope could be done by people on canes and walkers....sandy level bottom, the Navajo guide hauls you and a pickup load from the parking lot up the wash to the slot in their vehicle, then they tour you for 40 minutes or so, and haul you back.
I believe the fee is the same as Lower Antelope.

We stayed at the Page Campground in January when we were in Arizona for the winter, nice park, Antelope Canyon looks gorgeous we'll have to visit it next winter for sure.

Great possibilities....my bank is looking at using some of these Antelope Canyon shots, and some I have not posted, in framed giclees in the remodel of the bank!!!

Bob, the best time is within an hour each direction of solar noon (when the sun is at its highest in the sky).

Upper Antelope can be done by anyone who is able to get up into one of the Navajo pickup/buckboards to be hauled up the wash to the opening. It has a flat and sandy bottom.

Lower Antelope requires scrambling down ladders and then climbing up 50 ft of ladder/stairs to get out. Quite a bit more athletic than Upper Antelope.

Entrance fees are $6 for the Navajo Park fee and $20 for the guide fee for a total of $26 a person for the basic tour. Photo tours are more expensive, but you get more time.

You can do it either way.
I have always gone straight out on my own. They have a little typical Navajo wooden hut kiosk and a person there to take your money.

Go east of Page on Hwy 98 just a few miles, and Upper is on the South side of the road, and Lower on the North side on Hwy 98 before you get to the coal power plant.

It's been a while but as I remember the lower canyon is on public land so it's free. You may also be able to enter the canyon by boat from Lake Powell.

Not very likely, but beware of flash floods. It doesn't have to be raining where you are. A thunderstorm upstream can flood the canyon.

Allow me to sort out some of this.
I was there July 4, 2009, so my information is current.

The Lower Canyon inside of the Glen Canyon Recreation Area up to the Glen Canyon NPS Boundry, a part of the National Park System, you could access from the water inside the park paid for by your admission to Glen Canyon/Lake Powell.

The remainder of Antelope Canyon is entirely on Navajo Reservation Land and is inside their Navajo Tribal Park Boundary. To enter this area without paying the fee is trespassing prosecutable by the Navajo Nation Courts....capiche?...not Arizona Courts....Navajo Courts.

The Navajo have stepped up in places across the reservation and are very slowly developing a Navajo Tribal Park System. They are continuing to develop Antelope Marina at Lake Powell. They have built a new hotel at Monument Valley inside the Tribal Park at the visitor center. They have future plans for Marble Canyon South of Page, they now have a casino in Gallup....yessir, things are changing.

"Antelope Canyon Glow" - Inside Lower Antelope Canyon, near Page, AZ. When the sun is at the right angle, the walls seem to glow in a slot canyon. There are places the canyon is only a few feet wide, and other places it is 15 ft wide. It is a crack in the navajo sandstone, eroded by flash floods water and wind over time. Can be done 50" x 59" maximum size.


The guide says the Navajo go into the canyons when they are full of trouble and the swirls in the rocks take the troubles away. When the canyon gets too full of people's troubles, it brings the floods to wash them out. Neat thought.

From all the other comments from folks saying that Antelope Canyon is on their list of things to do, makes me wonder if a FCU Rally is in order?
