Terrific plan...hope that I can be there...

Zep,

I really appreciate your initiative on this adventure. Hope that I can clear the time to take it all in. You'd think that being retired and living just down the road a piece it would be easy to fit in, but the family and now teaching obligations do intrude.

Hmm, we like that area, will keep this thread in mind. There is a great BLM campsite west of Bluff, also. Called "Sand Island", right on the river. Dry camping. Anyone who drinks (not to excess, perish the thought) would be advised to pack lots, Utah is pretty dry.

Moving Rocks Rally

no, we're not moving the rocks, we're moving the rally!

here's a hot link to the particulars (just one page back) http://www.airforums.com/forums/757696-post42.html

A member has pointed out that she can't make the whole thing. Well, that's the point--come for the weekend that is either most interesting to you or a weekend that your schedule allows.

Which prompts me to think , hey, instead of doing this over several weekends, maybe it would be nifty to do one location a year, sort of a theme rally for the 4CU. The theme would be boondocking and photography (or cooking and drinking, whatever). There are a lot more than just three locations that offer the kinds of attractions mentioned above.

One thing I noted last week at Dead Horse State Park (next to Canyonlands) is that every improved campsite was full. You would have thought it was summer and the kids were out of school. Maybe the recession has made "seeing America" a more attractive option. Whatever, I couldn't believe the number of RVs out in the parks. If anyone else has similar experience, we should pool it and think about the crowds. Maybe if we do dispersed camping (a BLM term for boondocking) we can avoid them. I prefer it, in any event.

Zion NP

Will be in Zion NP, UT the second week in November to photograph. The Fall color in the canyon should be peaking if the photo gods smile on us. So if y'all are out and about, more aluminum is needed in the area.

Howard -
I'll also be in the neighborhood, with camera and aluminum. I have a permit for North Coyote Buttes on Nov 10 and will be based in Page for a few days. Thereafter I'll be in Monument Valley. I hope you're right about the timing of Fall colors!!

Some years it is great and some it is a flop. Just depends on what the weather does and how wet a year it has been. At Zion, the canyon is protected from the cold to a certain extent so a killing frost usually comes later. The upper parts of the park will probably have most of the color gone by then. Last year it was "green as grass" in the canyon the first week in Nov.

Trip Earlier This Year

Hope you enjoy the photo's taken from Glen Canyon Recreation (we camped here), from Antelope Slot Canyon (North) and from Horseshoe Bend. We stayed at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and was heading back South for a couple more stops.

Antelope North? Really? I didn't know there was an alcove like that in the north canyon.

How wide is your lens that you took the Horseshoe Bend with?

Lens

I used a Nikor 14-24mm f 2.8 ED attached to a Nikon D300. It's an outstanding lens, but it's heavy.

To my knowledge, as I was told by the tour company that I used for the photo shoot, that there is a North and South Slot Canyon's. Selecting which canyon is based upon what time of the day you go to get the best light to shoot.

Moving rocks rally ?

Hi.... I'm very interested in joining some folks in northern AZ for this rally. Any info on when? My plans are to be traveling in that area between Christmas and March or April. Seems like spring would be warmer fro boondocking. Love to boondock and very interested in the photo opportunities!
Please let me know!

Hey Zep.... Please let me know..... What week-ends are we talking about? I can't seem to get a clear fix on the dates. We're getting a late start out of Michigan... (around Nov. 15th). Love to meet up with you folks in this area, but don't know if we can get there soon enough! Please let me know what weeks we're talking about.

This will be springtime (May-ish) or fall (Sept-Oct) next year, 2010.
