Like a car, an Airstream is a metal cage and the lightning, if it hits it, should go around you and to ground. Some lightening may not read this and make a mistake, but I think it is pretty safe inside. If the antenna is up that could be hit and blow out the TV set through the coaxial cable. If you have an aluminum interior, I would stay away from it. The other path for lightening, and the far more likely one to experience is a power surge caused by lightening and coming in via the shore power. That's one reason people use SurgeGard or other surge protectors.

Most of time there are higher things around—trees, poles, buildings and 5th wheels and MH's.

I hope things cool down for you, but Midwest humidity can be brutal.

Well we are in trouble since our 71 Overlander has bunches of Aluminum in it.

I was told a long time ago that Lightening jumps circuits and surge protectors didn't help with in house electronics.... did someone lie to me?

Lightning does not behave well. It prefers a straight path to ground and will jump from conductor to conductor to get there. You can take lots of precautions and cut your losses. That's the best you can do.

Right now a thunderstorm is right over us in Santa Fe with lots of lightning and thunder and rain. I hope for the best. Power surges seem to be happening.

Time to mosey on down the road to St. Charles

Enough of this taking a break from the heat at my brothers house....tomorrow we head east to St. Charles......we may move on over to the Casino Queen RV park (E St. Louis) on our way to Cleveland, OH.....we plan to make a stop in Jackson Center....will check out the factory tour.....see if they still make Airstreams like they did in 1968......please hold good thoughts for the heat to lessen......for the trip leg.

Have enjoyed the time with family and friends in Oak Grove, MO......we made a few trips to Kansas City, Independence, Blue Springs.....Union Station, WWI War Memorial, Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, Jack's Stack (BBQ) and Lidia's for good food...we saw an Airstream food truck in downtown KC...we are also learning a bit about Walmart......we don't have any near us in LA.....and luckily we are finding some good doggie day care places for Bandit (Furry Friends Hangout in Blue Springs, MO).....paula

don't spend too much time in the Walmart. Your budget will get blown, if you have one, and you'll become strangely addicted.....

Don't expect much at the casino campground in E. St. Louis. If you've not been there before be forwarned. It's just a blacktop parking lot. Does have hookups so your AC is good there. And they do have cable, so that's good. But not much else. They have a pool in the casino bldg. but ( 2 summers ago) they didn't allow children in the casino bldg. So, if you have kids, that's out. It is a safe campground in an urban blight setting. It is a convienent jumping off spot for St. Louis sights so enjoy it for what it is.

We stayed in St. Charles, MO

We opted for Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles. That has allowed us to visit the Arch (yes, we rode to the top), Old Courtroom where the Dred Scott decision was made, downtown St. Charles site of the first Missouri Capitol, and the site on the Mississippi side where Lewis and Clark departed for their journey. We were also able to visit friends and family in the St. Louis Area.....loading up for Cleveland.

We have been going by Lewis and Clark places a lot on this trip and there is a neat exhibition of their keel boat near where they wintered before their journey began. We think we have it a lot easier than they did......

We were inside the Airstream for a spectacular thunderstorm yesterday when the lightening and very loud thunder happened at what seemed like the same time......something we aren't used to.....

Will try to post pictures later, paula

One day we will see the Arch. Maybe next year on our way to the NE, keep notes so we can pick your brains.

We will be waiting for you picks!

just be thankful you are between tornado seasons.... the storms are spectacular and scary at the same time.

We enjoyed our time in St. Charles/St. Louis

First, we said goodbye to my brother in Western Missouri...drove I70 to St. Charlels, MO.

We rode up the Arch, saw the old Courtroom where the Dred Scott decision was rendered, saw where Lewis and Clark departed, partied with friends and family....stayed at Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles.....an okay park--not many trees and the flight path by the airport wasn't too bothersome....but it was well located.....survived a very close and intense thunderstorm......and the heat....

Jackson Center, OH

Today we toured the Airstream factory here in Jackson Center.....lots of shiny new trailers are rolling off the floor....and they are hiring new workers.....we are plugged into the Terraport at the factory......we had a power outage at 4:30 pm ---after the close of the work day....it was off for 2 1/2 hours.....and it was very hot without the AC.......sure glad we had not left Bandit in the trailer unattended......fun meeting folks that are here for repairs......some interesting vintage trailers out front.....

By the way, I-70 was terrible across Illinois, only to worsen in Indiana and Ohio.....our poor trailer was beaten up big time......only back roads for us to Cleveland.....

The last couple of trips I made out west I used Rt. 80. I haven't been on I 70 for awhile. I80 is not bad at all so I guess it's best to stay to the north. Our stimulus money at work. Fix the highway and cause you to spend more on your trailer. Go figure.
Glad your trip is going well. We went up in the arch while in St. Louie but didn't know about the Lewis / Clark sights. Have to look into them on the next trip west.

We are thinking we will go I-80 when we leave Omaha for home and 395 from Reno......the Eastern Sierra is our own playground so we know it well and we love it....the Sierras to our right as we move south....

We are now southeast of Cleveland at the Pier-Lon Park Campground, Medina....it was tough finding a place near Cleveland......this seems to be a nice large park. The weather, while still hot, is tolerable.....We have to be in Downtown Cleveland at 8:30 am so we found what we hope to be a good place for Bandit to spend the night.....Hart's Kennels here in Litchfield.

We took backroads to here so the roads were okay......after tomorrow we plan to head north to Michigan.....maybe Oscoda to meet some grandchildren.......

Beware, it's been several years since we were in Michigan but the roads were terrible then. I seriously doubt that they will be much better now. They shoook our AS up enough that I lost my license plate. It just got shaken off. I noticed it at the campground we stayed at.

Oh, no....not more bad roads.....it seems as though almost every bridge is being replaced......I don't think the road people drive over the roads themselves......just found a machine screw on the mattress pad when doing laundry....wonder where it came from.......

Now, in Michigan, did you go interstates or state highways? paula
