Our First Trip! Airstream Haven (Pics)
We picked up our Airstream this weekend and headed out on our very first trip to the Airstream Haven in NJ. It was also our first experience towing a trailer. Despite a bit of nervousness, everything went as smooth as silk. The campground was lovely, and it was cool to be in an all Airstream park. Although we didn't have much time to socialize, everybody we met was super friendly and offered to help with just about every little thing. The trailer functioned perfectly, except we could not get the oven's pilot light lit. Yes, we bled the air out of the lines and got the range to work, but that darn pilot would not ignite. Any ideas?
I posted some pics on our new website, which will soon be a blog detailing all of our adventures to come... http://www.roadtrip.cc/AirstreamHaven/

Hey Woof,
The pilot lighting area is usually located toward the rear of the burner section on the left side. You can see it with a flashlight. With the oven knob on 'light pilot' or 'pilot on' you have to hold a lighter or gas match right up to the pilot for about 15 seconds in order for it to light. A spark igniter will not work. There is a thermocouple there and if it is not hot enough, it will not hold the gas valve open to allow the LP to reach the pilot. It takes a while, but it is one of the redundant safety features built in to the RV ovens. If you then ant to use the oven or broiler, you have to leave the oven control in the 'pilot on' position. If you turn it to 'off', it will shut down all gas flow to the oven including the pilot.
Good luck with you new baby!!
BTW, this: won't work to get it lit!!

Lewster, thanks for the oven info. I think the problem may have been that I didn't hold the flame to the pilot long enough. I was thinking that could be a bad thing!
The last picture is my BrakeSmart controller readout. I set the default display to "www.roadtrip.cc" which is the website for our Airstream blog which will begin once we hit the road fulltime in July. And in case you were wondering, the "cc" stands for "cross country"

Congrats on choosing an Airstream. It's great that your maiden voyage was to Jersey Shore Haven. It's a most appropriate place to christen an Airstream. JSH has been our weekend retreat for a couple of years now. Hope you both come back and visit again sometime.
fyi - July 2nd will feature a Luau poolside and potluck dinner - all Airstreamers missing this years International are welcome.

What fun pictures! That was a veritable feast for the eyes! Airstream Park is cool. Congrats on your new unit. I really love the mirror picture, By the way what kind of towing mirrors are you using? You have one great set-up and you have a flair for style. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Zomby,
Great photos!! Liked the photo of your Hensley!! Your look in the first photo reminded me of my first hookup...
Each time I hook up I learn another trick that makes it easer.
Keep a close eye on your chevy hitch with the Hensley. I was warned to check my hitch and I did find some rust that "might" have been a weak weld. When I went to my dealer he replaced the hitch on the spot.
Hope your travels take you close to Virginia in the future!!
Abe

The GM receiver was in the dumpster before I ever pulled a pound. Replaced it with the Putnam XDR Class V tow monster. I didn't put them on a scale for comparison, but the Putnam felt about 10-15 lbs heavier...
The mirrors are of the McKesh variety. Unfortunately I didn't get to choose the options on my truck when I bought it (it was the last 8.1L Suburban in the NE), otherwise I would I have went with the factory tow mirrors. They did the job, but next time I'll have to tighten them a little better to prevent vibrations.
Before we went out for our first trip, we knew Airstream was the best based on our research and observations. Now we know why based on real experience. Wow, what a great trailer!!!
