Oregon to Southern California: advice or itineraries?

We are driving down to the Rose Bowl the day after Christmas and are looking to take US 101. I've heard it's a beautiful drive and adds several hours to the journey (how many hours?). We are looking for advice on places to overnight and a possible itinerary from a fellow Airstreamer who's made the journey. Go Ducks!

going down 101

We went down 101 as far as Clear lake this last September. Took Hwy 199 from Grants Pass to Hiouchi Rv resort which is about 6 miles NE of Crescent City. Got on 101 from there. A lot of places to stay on 101. Klamath Camper Corral in Klamath, RiverWalk Rv Park in Fortuna and Konocti Vista Casino Rv Park to name just a few. Most of the driving on 101 is not too bad, a lot of small towns to go through which slows you down. Go on the internet and google RV places to stay on 101. Get all the reviews etc.

Have a great time!

Lynn

Like previous poster said, lots of places to camp. Harris beach down by Brookings is a favorite. I would call and check the state parks you may pick because some shut down in the off season, I believe. I can't say how much time it adds to a trip taking 101. It will add quite a bit of time to the trip over the interstate. It is a great trip if the weather allows you or at least the passengers to take in the sights. If you decide to take the trip I would keep an eye on the weather and have an alternative plan.

Enjoy the trip and the game.

Thank you very much Tony. We took the I-5 down to SF a few weeks ago and would love a change of scenery as we head south again.

Recent trip down and back up the 101

We just traveled from the central Oregon coast down 101 to I5 to San Diego and back primarily up 101 to Ventura, Morro Bay, Saratoga (near Los Gatos) to San Francisco, camping at Marin RV Park in Greenbrae, on to Meyers Flat, Giant Redwood RV Park, then on to Gold Beach, Ocean Side RV in 60 mile/hr winds and rains. We took 101 down the coast to Reedsport and over to I5 staying at Cypress Grove near Gold Hill, Oregon then down I5 to Red Bluff to Durango RV park which was incredible with bocce courts, pool, basket ball court, fenced dog runs and beautiful landscaping and club house and amenities. Found all of this on AllStays iPad app. All had plenty of spaces as this is off season. Hope this helps. We usually traveled around 200 miles per day.

We will be heading down to Southern California for the Rose Bowl as well, but coming from the desert. Current plans are to stay at the KOA in Pomona about 30 minutes from the stadium. This will only be our second trip in our 19' Bambi!

Our son goes to college in Arcata and we have made the drive from there to southern nevada several times. The 101 is one of the most scenic highways in the west but it takes considerably more time than the 5. Certainly worth the trip if you have the luxury of time.

GO DUCKS!!

From San Francisco to L.A. expect 11 hours instead of 7, but worth it. Ocean Mesa RV resort in Golita, nice but pricey. Rincon Parkway just outside of Ventura. First come first served right on the ocean. No hook ups $28 a day best stay ever if you like the ocean. Amtrac run right to the inland side so expect to hear it roar thru but again worth it.

To begin with, taking Hwy 1/101 will as opposed to I-5 will MANY more hours on the road. However, they will be worth the trip. Just TAKE IT SLOW between Manchester and Gualala and from 30 miles north of Jenner to Bodega Bay. The road can be very tight and demanding. Near to your home, we love Beverly Beach in Newport. It would be a good start. Crossing into CA we love Patrick's Point SP near Trinidad. Morro Bay SP and Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles are two of our favorites on the central coast. Ocean Mesa RV resort near Santa Barbara would be a final stop on the way to Pasadena. We may see you at the parade.

You have so many beautiful choices for the southern portion of your trip....

I love Marina Dunes which is off why 1 in Marina. You can stay in Marina then drive to Carmel. Hwy 1 is really the way to go for beautiful sight seeing.

Marina Dunes RV Park, Marina California

Other choices are Avila beach for a beachfront site. It's approximately 3 hours from Pasadena. Or lake casitas recreation area which is approximately 1 and a half hours from Pasadena.

I can list many, but then you might get confused

Happy trails!!

Another good place to stay on your way south is Pismo Coast Village in Pismo Beach. We are there now until the 30th. (reservation suggested) Right next door is North Beach State Park. (I think it is first come first served this time of year.)

As a fellow Duck supporter, I wish you well on this wonderful trip! Last Christmas I got a 2014.5 Interstate EXT! The trip you are planning is one that I want to take sometime in the future. I love my new Interstate. Although it is not as roomy as a regular AS, the accommodations are very comfortable and it drives great! The mpg are awesome and I have enjoyed belonging to WBCCI and attending their events and rallies! Everyone is so friendly and extremely helpful on AS operational questions!! Have a safe trip and enjoy the game!! GO DUCKS!!

Give Flying Flags RV Resort in Buellton/Solvang a try. Especially good if you like peas soup (Anderson's nearby)!!!

Oregon to Southern California

Go Ducks, indeed. Its a great ride, but remember that winter storms are quite an inhibitor. Give some thought to staying with 1-5 and cross the costals to Florence. That will save you some of the touristy traffic. Great spots south, Point Reyes, Stimson Beach, Monterey/Carmel, the famous highway bridge near Big Sur. San Luis Obispo is a great layover spot. Things get busy again as you approach Santa Maria and Lompoc. Great RV park in Santa Barbara/Ventura then its turn East at Santa Monica and the Arroyo Seco is not far. Plan to miss the rush hour traffic at San Francisco and again south of Santa Barbara, same advice when you head North.

Our plan was to cross over to the coast from Grant's Pass so that we save a little bit of time and hopefully miss some of the coastal storms. Ideally we'll catch a lucky break and have clear skies during our journey. We are considering an overnight stay in either Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo and definitely spending a day in Santa Barbara. Thank you all for the great travel tips and Happy Holidays. -Go Ducks!

What a great trip, we have pulled it many times and look forward to doing it again soon. All the places mentioned are great and so are Winchester Bay in Winchester Oregon and Cape Blanco state park, North of Port Orford.

Crossing over at Grants Pass is a good plan.

101 is closed at Hecta Head. Road said to have sunk and impassable. We just finished a trip to coast and had to detour around it. We had to go back to Florence back inland to Veneta and over to Corvallis and then down HWY 20 to Newport to get to our destination.
