Schedule a stop in Port Orford and eat on the marina dock restaurant operated by a former restaurant chef who just could not stay retired. You may be able to park the night overlooking the bay where you need to walk down to the dock. The Motel that is perched on the cliff is a great option if so desired. Next be sure to stay a few days at Nehalem State Park and get on the beach. It is a very favorite spot of mine. The next place up the coast is Cannon Beach, also a must walk on the beach adventure. It takes a long time to travel the coast hyway. If you travel more than 150 miles a day you are missing too much.

Beachside is our favorite and killer Mexican Food in Waldport (at the marina…not on Hwy 1). When I mention Beachside to locals, so often is the remark…that’s the place that Gramma & Grampa always took us. A small, quiet family campground, even on Labor Day, the 10 or so miles of beach from Yachats to Waldport with Beachside in the middle is yours….and dog friendy! Someone mentioned Tillicum…almost adjacent, but no showers/ele etc. Very nice. Another favorite is Sunset Bay. Bucket list: Harris Beach, Cape Blanco (no resies), Umpqua Lighthouse SP & Beverly Beach.

The pics are of Beachside Labor Day 2014. BS is midway between Yachats & Waldport and about a 5 mile walk on the beach (each way) if you're in shape. It was 81 that day!!!!

As this is an Oregon Coast thread I didn’t want to hijack it and get off track. But since a few have mentioned continuing on HWY 1 in Ca, I thought it appropriate.

[Mark Wiltrakis Silver Hilton
Once into California, stick to 101 and avoid the temptation to cut over to Hwy 1 if you continue south beyond Crescent City. Hwy 1 is much more scenic, [but not a place I'd want to take my trailer.]

Having lived at Sea Ranch on Hwy 1 for many years, IMO… Hwy 1 is not to be missed, nor forgotten. I’ve been behind many a motorhome/TV-trailer and trucker heading up and down the coast. Sure, Leggett 101/1 to Westport and down to Ft. Bragg isn’t fun, even in a Volvo XC. Take your time, enjoy the forest scenery and you’ll be fine. An alternative route is Hwy 20 from Willits to Ft Bragg. Trucks serving FB use this route….up and down but plenty wide. It’s Ft. Bragg south to Ft. Ross/Jenner (and on to Bodega Bay/Petaluma)is what you want to experience anyway.

There are two sections of Hwy 1 that are very curvy. Leggett to Hardy is truly curvy but a beautiful mostly forested road. But from Hardy on, it’s opens up a bit and is a good coastal road past Ft Bragg, Mendo, Pt Arena, The Sea Ranch, Ft. Ross and on to Jenner. {note: Ft Ross is rich in CA history and Gerstle Cove/Salt Point SP is [IMO} the best coastal hiking on the entire west coast.] Ft. Ross to Jenner is curvy, but sane. It’s the views that are insane. Again, single tractor trailers make this run all day long

On Hwy 1, that I remember, there are two tail skid corners, but those only affect the SB traffic as they are both right hand turns and very tight. The first…heading south, is just S of Elk (I believe). You can generally see the traffic coming down the hill as you approach uphill and can time you wide swing to safely make the turn by creeping into the left lane a bit. There isn’t that much traffic along this section. The second, is the last switchback at the bottom of Russian Gulch….a few miles upstream from Jenner. Here you can see the traffic coming uphill so it is very easy to control your timing on the turn but there is more traffic here. No question, both are very hard/tight right turns and the AC shows the evidence. Again SB….NB there are no issues that I can remember and I used to tow a trailer filled with construction materials hanging out the back NB.

Caveats…1) trailer length: Obviously guidance may not be as applicable for those longer AS’s. 2) Jenner to Sea Ranch…27 miles…50 minutes with no traffic in a Volvo…but breath taking. This is where the San Andreas comes back inland at Ft Ross. Check out the cover of “Insight Guides ~ United States on the Road.”… this is the fault.

SB past Bodega Bay, I would suggest not thinking of staying on SB Hwy 1 at Valley Ford, to Stinson Beach and up & over Mt. Tamalpais to Mill Valley and the Golden Gate Bridge. Pick up 101 in Petaluma, stop at Sam’s Harbor in Tiburon for fish and chips and a great view of SF across the bay…assuming that’s your direction.

One last add….Wrights Beach Midway between Hwy the 1/116 (to Guerneville) bridge & Bodega Bay. It’s a tiny little RV/campground below Hwy 1 and right on the beach. Every time I went by to/from Sea Ranch, I thought…what a great location to camp…gotta stop sometime. Now I live in OR & it’s on the bucket list.

From what I can make out from the map, this area puts the "wild" back into wilderness . . .

Nice!

Thanks again,

Peter

I wanted to clarify the above since there were no additional posts.

I have a buddy (other college roommate) that drifts the Rogue each year. They put in at Galice and pull out at Agnes, then take a shuttle back over the hill back to Galice...so, as I understand, no it is not a dead end at Agness.

We attempted to drive the road in '99 before we moved to OR … to jump over to Gold Beach. It was the first week in November and a storm had rolled thru, but the folks at the Galice Store said...”sure, the gates are open…you should be fine”.

Weather was clear and so was the road, at least at that elevation (Galice on the Rogue). It was a well-marked paved FS road and we were following a couple of 4X4’s. As we gained elevation there was some snow…the 4x’s finally peeled off when the road had apparently crested and we thought we could make it but the snow started to be more than a dusting and we immediately turned around.

http://abcnews.go.com/2020/kati-kim-...ry?id=12884927

I suspect that this is a beautiful road in the summer and very possibly one that could accommodate a 20 or so since the shuttles probably tow the drift boats/rafts back. In fact I want to do just that sometime soon.

This is a tragic story and wish everyone to be very careful and safe in their explorations.

We're planning a trip along the Columbia Gorge to Astoria and down the OR/CA coast to San Francisco in September.

With so many campgrounds along the coast and not wanting to be tied to a schedule, is it really necessary to reserve sites and map this all out in advance?

mojo, not sure if Bob [CruizinDux] has time to comment before his trip, but he is a wealth of info. on that area of the NW.

We did did Glacier NP, Columbia Gorge and then down the Or/CA coast last fall (Sept-Oct). We didn't make any reservation along the way and did not have any issues finding places to stay. This for us works much better as we don't ever travel with an itinerary so we never know how far we might get in a day. I might not try this during the holiday months of summer but a fall trip works well without any reservations.

My other comment is if your going from north to south your going the right direction. All the pullouts are on the sea side (west side), so getting into them is much easier if your going south.

Hope you have a wonderful trip. We loved it and will be back again to see all the stuff we missed the first time.....

Cheers
Doug

Thanks Fox, was hoping that CG's will be a little less competitive for space in the Fall. There just seems to be too many campgrounds on the Oregon coast to make a pre-decision on where to stop and spend some time!

Mojo, timing is everything. We're leaving for Beachside SP tomorrow. (03-08-2016 08:06 PM above) After Labor Day it all opens up a lot, even at Beachside. You may not get full hookups (Beachside like many have only Ele/H20 and DS down the road) but I believe hot showers(free) are the standard.

While I have favorites mentioned above, you really can go wrong with any Oregon SP.

The website is pretty good. Some places like Carl Washburn (N of Florence) and Cape Blanco (Southern coast) are FCFServed.

Happy trails and enjoy Oregon (GO Ducks)

Regarding Ft. Stevens State Park, what are the recommendations as far as which loops to stay in during the summer?

IMO stay to the north loops. It has been a # of years but my recollection S loops (on what ever I was looking at ...Google maybe) appeared to have lakes, that turned out to be summer bogs and loaded with mosquitos. After we checked in we requested a different spot. N was full but at least we got away from backing up to the bog.

Re: Ft. Stevens.
You can see a map of the campground online.
Note that only loops L & M are full hookups and are on the north side of the CG. Others are power and water but no sewer (there is a CG dump station though). It's a big CG, I think all sites are "in the trees" and are not far from the ocean, but the ocean is not visible from the CG. Being a large CG, I preferred sites that are away from the main central access roads, which tend to have a fair amount of traffic. The park has a huge amount of prime real estate, including miles of beach and the remains of the Peter Iredale, a 4-masted steel British sailing ship that ran aground in 1906. There are excellent views of the mouth of the Columbia River (4 miles wide) as it enters the ocean, and commercial ship traffic runs close to shore.

Toothpull -
I took another look at the CG map online. My error: H&I are indeed full hookups and L&M are south loops, not north. Apologies . . .

A real gem on the South Coast is Cape Blanco. My wife and I volunteered as Lighthouse Hosts there last October and had a great time. PM me for tips on the area, such as hikes, sights and restaurants, if you're going to visit.

The South Coast is our favorite - fewer people and beautiful scenery.

Cheers,
John
