Oregon Coast Hwy 101

We are taking 4 days to mosey down 101 from Astoria to Crescent City (wherever the Redwoods are). So traveling 3 hours or less per day. Can someone tell us the best places to see and the best 3-4 parks to stay in on the way down? Starting April 1. Thanks!

Be aware 101 is closed indefinitely 12 miles north of Brookings due to land slide. You can take winding Carpenterville Road as a detour. Check Tripcheck.com when traveling Oregon.

The Redwoods, at least the area that we really enjoy, are more South than Crescent City. Check out the "Avenue of the Giants" located to the North of Garberville, CA.

With 101 closed, this might be a trip that needs to be delayed. The 101 route is a great drive South, but most of the connecting cross roads are miles of tight twisty travel. You might consider taking a drive along the Columbia as an alternative, if it is not possible to wait for the repair of 101. Then again, 101 may have a lot less traffic with the closure and that's not a bad thing for your slow and relaxing trip.

We liked our stay at http://www.cbrvresort.com/

Travel safe and find those smiles. Pat

FYI the new search function in the blue box above works great [desktop version of this site], and here are the results for "Oregon Coast" which may add helpful info to what you receive in this thread:

Have a great trip . . . we hope to get out that way someday!

Loved the town of Florence - great seafood - about 10 miles north of Florence is the Hobbit trail - absolutely beautiful hike not to be missed. Google it for exact directions.

Or 255 is a real adventure 23 miles of narrow twisty road. We just traveled it towing a33 Classic. Be careful.

That's too bad about the highway closure. Some of our favourite parks along that route are Carl G. Washburne Memorial SP just north of Florence and Harris Beach SP in Brookings.

There is a wonderful redwood grove outside of Crescent City (Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park).

Check out Oregon State Parks along the way down the 101. All of the parks and recreation locations are very well maintained and spacious.

Download the Caltrans QuickMap app for highway info. Elk Country RV resort might be a fun spot. http://www.elkcountryrvresort.com/

As a native Oregonian ...

April = rain on the coast. Be prepared. The Oregon Coast is a treasure best enjoyed with careful planning in the best season. Reservations essential. July - September. Good luck and welcome to the “Great Pacific Northwet”.

Did a similar trip last year after International in Salem
and spent several days 'unwinding' at Jessie M Honeyman SP near Florence OR. Very nice park with good facilities.
