One night stay in New England

Heading to Maine in June. We're starting off in PA and would like to cut the drive into two days on the way up and the way back. Kinda wanted to make a loop and leave PA and head up more towards Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts on our way up. Then on the way back wanted to come back thru New Hampshire, Vermont, and upstate New York. Any suggestions on one night stays in Connecticut or Rhode Island on the trip up and Vermont or upstate New York on the way back? Really didn't want to stay at KOA type place for one night. Having hookups is not essential either. Sort of wanted a place nearby that we could take the kids (7 & 8) to and do something outdoorsy with. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

A fave for us is the Army COE campground in the northeast corner of CT. Lots of trails to hike, kayaking, a frisbee golf course and more. Really well maintained, great location and near the intersections of 395, 290 and the Mass Pike. Link below - I think you have to reserve through Reserve America online. Good luck!

There were a couple of threads which touched on this recently:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f382...od-173450.html
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...ct-172134.html
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...ay-121196.html
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...ng-160092.html

We have stopped at the I-84 rest area near the NY line, east bound, which has a dump station, but lots of truck traffic overnight. There is Mohegan Sun info in one of the threads above, which I will find later today if you need it. On The Road Again right now.

Mystic Seaport CT and Sturbridge Village MA are somewhat nearby and are great for kids. The new search function in the blue box above works great, so input each of these places to see posts on topic.

Good luck!

Peter

When going thru VT - Elmore Mountain State Park - near Stowe VT - very pretty - hiking, biking, swimming, etc.

Sounds like you are trying to jam a lot into a short time.

Oh - forgot the VT part on the way back. Another thought there - even though you don't want KOAs - there's one in Quechee near a lot of beautiful waterfalls and trails and not that far a drive to Plymouth VT for the Calvin Coolidge homestead and Presidential library. We loved it! Could easily spend a day there and I would imagine kids would love it too. If you're really against KOAs, search AllStays around Plymouth VT and you'll see a few state parks and other private campgrounds nearby (but that Quichee KOA is nice and well located for outdoorsy stuff...).

Thanks for all the replies. Talked to a buddy of mine today and he suggested on the way back we stop in Manchester Vermont and check out the Orvis Store, Lincoln Family Home, and the flyfishing museum. He stayed at a campground there a few years ago on his way to Canada for a night and then moved on and said it was worth it. So, we might give that a shot unless something else seems better.

You can park your Airstream at my house in Sandgate Vermont. I’m right on a beautiful trout stream that is a tributary of the Battenkill. This is the same river that Orvis uses for fly fishing near Manchester Vermont.

That's what I love about the Airstream community. Always there to help. I'll keep you posted with where we end up on our way back to PA.

Vermont airstreamer

We have courtesy parking in Vermont. Often travel 'down' to Pa from here. Happy to help if we can. Have W/E hook ups.
