datil wells

this is a great stopping point on US 60...a blm camp ground...no elec with camp water and no dump...the hiking trails are just perfect and well maintained...the wells part is that it is one of 15 wells along an old cattle trail....just off the highway but still very quite....$2.50 with golden age pass...

stayed there last night and have since traveled to show low and fools hollow state park, where we are the only resident/.....

There's some kind of statement there, about you being the only resident in fool's hollow. It's like you being the Mayor of Crazy Town! :P

a fools' paradise

that's me...to a tee... fool on a hill

Day after day
alone on a hill
the man with the foolish grin
is keeping perfectly still
but nobody wants to know him
they can see that he's just a fool
and he never gives an answer

But the fool on the hill
sees the sun going down
and the eyes in his head
see the world spinning round

Fool's Hollow is one of our premier state parks and one of our favorites in the summer. I would imagine that you are getting a little dose of winter up there. Are you going to head down US 60 as you move towards Picacho? If you are planning to go through Globe, you will drive through one of my favorite drives in AZ through the Salt River Canyon it is beautiful and a fun drive too.

Fool Hollow to Globe

We stayed at Fool Hollow in late January of this year when the snow was four foot high on the sides of the road...just beautiful...today it is is 50'ish and wind as ...welll they call it brezy 30-40 mph gusts... it is a beautiful park....would not want to be here in the summertime tho...i believe it would be packed.... we love the drive down 60 and the salt river canyon...

but

I was wondering could i take my rig down 260 to the intersection of 288 and then go south and then pick up 188 south of roosevelt lake to globe??????

thanks

Watch the Apache Trail, AZ88 dirt road.

Ya'll are is some peaceful county.
Heads-up on AZ-88 from Roosevelt Lake to Tortilla Flats. This road appears paved as you start from the Dam but just over the first rise, turns narrow, steep and twisty gravel/dirt road, much of it single track. Beautiful country as you follow the Salt river, we plan to go back WITHOUT the trailer. AZ-88 East of this spot is a great drive towards Globe.

I agree with BobU on AZ-88 between Roosevelt Lake and Apache Junction...you do NOT want to tow your trailer over that road. You will really be sorry. I don't even want to take the truck by itself over that road...

If you take 260 west to 87, then southwest on 87 to 188 and head south east toward Globe passing by Roosevelt Lake, stay on 188 until you get to Globe...then go west on 60 ...that will take you right into the east end of Metro Phx by Apache Junction ...the roads are good and it's pretty country. There are some good dry camping campgrounds at Roosevelt Lake, too, and the weather shouldn't be too cold. If yo want a nic estopping pace after you get down to the valley, check our Lost Dutchman State Park which is about 5 miles northeast out of Apache junction on 88 (but coming from the other direction)...but before it turns to dirt/gravel... In fact, we are planning to stay at Lost Duchman over Christmas before we head down to Picacho Peak... Lost Dutchman is dry camping for now...they are upgrading some sites to water & electricity but those are enot open yet...

Safe travels! And we'll see you at Picacho if not before!

apache trail

we know about 88 and the 24 miles of gravel road from previous threads...thanks to all....

maps show a "desert to tall pines" byway ...288 that goes south from 260
to the east of roosevelt lake through the salt river canyon wilderness and intersects 188 just north of glode....is this road travelable with a stream in tow?????

AZ-288 is also called the Young Road (Young, AZ) is a dirt road that is not very smooth and is very rough to travel on. We have camped on this road 3 miles south of 260 and hated the ride to the campground. The 3 mile ride to the campground (with trailer) will take 20-30 minutes because of the wash boarding and pot holes.

The area close to 260 can be covered with snow and ice this time of the year because of the altitude.

There is a winter storm warning in effect for your area and it could get very nasty tonight. Today would be a good day to exit the high country...

salt river canyon

it was raining as we left show low after a plesant stay at the fool hill...the drive down us 60 into the salt river canyon is more than spectacular...in a gentle rain it is more than that...from show low to globe is the most beautiful scenery imaginable...and a fun road to drive to boot...

from globe on into apache junction...is fairly impressive as well

we are now at lost dutchman state park...set up with a gentle rain falling on the desert.......

cain't get no better..... butit aways seems too
