Thanks Caroljb, I am headed to Michigan for my first time next August. Planning on staying two months to escape the Texas heat. Thanks for the great information! Its just what I needed to help plan my trip.

Make sure you stay at either Higgins Lake north or south state park. Higgins Lake is ranked #7 in the world by National Geographic. Visibility is about 25 ft. You walk out 100 yds and the water is up to your knees, you go another 100 yds and it is up to your neck, then it gets deep- over 100ft.

Also see the entire north shore of the UP- from Copper Harbor to Sault Saint Murray.

Typical summer temperatures are low 80s during the day to high 50s at night.

Don't miss the western shore of Lake Michigan all the way to Sleeping Bear Dunes or the Eastern shore on Lake Huron.

You will have a great summer!

Good to know since there's a good chance our son will be going to Michigan Tech in Houghton. I went with him for a college visit and was impressed with how pretty Michigan was. We like state park camping so this is great news!

There are a couple of good books on Amazon if you search Michigan State Parks. My wife and I have done two circle tours of the U.P. as fall vacations, and we typically go after Labor Day. Third and Fourth week of Septemer is usually peak color season.

There are great parks everywhere, some right on the water.

Here's a link through University of Michigan that has some great photos and trip reports:

You'll love it! Don't hesitate to ask if we can be helpful.

Do not miss Torch Lake, ranked third most beautiful in the WORLD, by National Geographic Magazine! It is in the vicinity of Traverse City, which is also gorgeous.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake shore is also a gem not to be missed.

Pretty remote, most of it anyway, and very pretty.

MrUKToad needs to hear about the yoopers then, I bet.

What Da Heck Is A Yooper?

The people that live in the Upper Peninsula or the U.P. are called "Yoopers" and are proud of it. The people that live under the bridge are called "trolls." The song "I'm a Troll Man" was written about them. Lots of trolls from down below dream about moving to da U.P., but there's no work here. So we let them come up to relax, enjoy and spend their cash, but they gotta go home afterwards.

Thank you. It's a place we will no doubt visit, especially as it's a lot closer to us than most of the rest of Canada!

Excellent! I shall be searching under bridges for those trolls...
