Day 59..... Forgot to mention, at Ouray, there was the FJ3 Summit....Toyota off-roaders. They're were everywhere. Couple of side streets wer,e blocked off for vendors. All kinds of stuff to spend your money on. We did hike most of the Perimeter trail. A portion of it reminded me of the Highline Trail hike at Glacier NP. Narrow trail cut out of rock ledge. Good hike. Great views of Ouray and surrounding area.

We just landed at a NFS campground located on Blue Mesa Reservoir. Never been in a NFS campground like this. All asphalt, 4 bars with AT&T, beautiful views.
More to follow.

Day 60.....with a saloon name of Silver Eagle, has to be great!....not so much. Ouray is a scenic town, too touristy for us.

Sorry again for the sideways photo....went in straight.

Day 60.....con't..... Just returned from exploring the north rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The drive up Rte 92 from the dam at Blue Mesa Reservoir to the turnoff to Black Canyon NP at Crawford is spectacular. Black Canyon is a site to behold. The drive up and back, as well as the drive along the North Rim road, as well as the 3 mile hike to Exclamation Point, is some of the most impressive scenery I have seen. The hike along the north rim along the North Vista Trail was more enjoyable than the drive, maybe because we were the only hikers. There are many pull offs on the drive, our favorites were Kneeling Camel View and Big Island View. Not to be missed, is Chasm View, which is about a half mile walk, but off the road to the North Rim Campground. There is also the same named view on the South Rim, which we plan to see tomorrow. More to follow.....

Ok, one of you smart guys is going to have to instruct me on getting photos to load upright. Sized correctly. Posted straight. Again, sorry. Nothing ruins a post like sideways/upside down pics.

Day 61..... Today we went back to Black Canyon and explored the South Rim. The visitor center on the south side is about five times the size of the center on the north side....read that lots more people. We stopped at the pull offs like good tourist. Even on a Monday morning, parking at the pull offs was crowded. I remind myself that patience is a virtue..... Attached is a picture taken from the Warner Point "stroll" . This is the highest point along the canyon where the gorge is about a 2755' drop. That flat top "hill" in the background is Grand Mesa....about 10,000' AGL.

While at the south rim, we did as SeeMore suggested.....we took "the stroll" to Warner Point. Beautiful walk through pinyon pines and juniper evergreens along the trail. A picture of Jeanne on the trail.

Well, about frustrated enough with posting pics here....

If you edit your pictures down in size a bit, they should post right side up...at least, that has worked for me.

Google "Airforums Shooting Star Campground" that brought up some mentions and blogs about stays.

Yes, 2 nights last summer - good stay, nice folks, and a cool drive-in theater to boot. Close to town and area attractions. I prefer higher elevation dry camping this time of year (cooler + more elbow room), personally, but we liked Shooting Star. Westcoastas may have some insights or additional suggestions (see his thread on Escalante and/or send PM), as he had been residing in this area.

Regards - Ron

Here's a picture of Shooting Star from last year (drive-in on the left, ours is the newer AS second down the row on the right) - sorry, don't have a spot number. You might call and ask the owners about spots with shade, as this was in short supply where we parked but would be nice this time of year. We will be dry camping in the general area (not specifically Escalante) in early August - Singletree on Boulder Mountain (not far from Capitol Reef), and Pine Lake (not far from Bryce). These are higher elevation, cooler and better shaded, but no hook-ups.

Safe travels - Ron

No hook ups are fine with us. We'll check those out. Will probably stay at Shooting Star for Coupke days. We really enjoy slot canyons. Again, thanks

So... I'm guessing you're taking these pictures with an iPhone? The iPhone doesn't actually rotate a vertical picture, it just puts a meta tag on it that Airstream Forums doesn't recognize. To get the photo to display properly, you need to edit it. Doesn't matter what you do (crop a bit, tweak the color, brighten it up a bit, whatever) just edit it and save a new copy. That copy will display as you expect it it to because the orientation will now be baked into the image rather than just a meta tag.

I just discovered your travelog here, and enjoyed reading all of it. But I was particularly moved by the mention of Jake's passing. Our first Airstream Adventure began with a similar loss, so I understand that feeling all to well. That story became the first entry to our travel blog:

Safe and wonder trvels to you both!

Route Advice

We are currently camped NE of Gunnisonn near Taylor reservoir. We leave tomorrow for South Fork.

Looking for advice on taking Rt 149 south Gunnison to South Fork. I've read that the grade going south up Slumgullion pass is steep and winding. No length restrictions I can find..

Your experienced info appreciated.
