We've still been talking about our time at your house. Thanks again for hosting us on your (not) really steep driveway.

Acadia..

Acadia was lovely! (We had no internet or phone whatsoever...so, I'm uploading a couple of pictures from Acadia a few days late.)

Blackwoods was full on our arrival day and departure day! I'm glad we made reservations.

Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive

First things first. After Acadia, we headed toward Shenandoah but before we turned onto the parkway we had to make one (important?) stop, to Dinosaur Land.

This place exceeds even my (extremely high) limits in kitsch..

But we had to go. For several reasons. 1) I would never hear the end of it if a certain 6 year old didn't get to go. 2) Everyone else thought it was too ridiculous not to go. 3) I was outvoted.

(Not to fear, there will be dozens of glossy photos of this crazy place on the blog soon!)

After the deed was done we turned onto Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.

It was very foggy when we pulled into the first visitor's center near mile marker 5.

Hi Someday '59!

Those are some fantastic photos, thanks for sharing them! I now know that we want to go to Acadia NP sometime soon. That pic of "Someday '59" going through the tunnel was both beautiful and scary -- were you close to the ceiling and side? Were there any under passes you traveled through while in New England which could be a problem?

I want to say that we both agree with others (and we were remiss in not stating this sooner), your children are adorable and extremely well behaved.

Happy and safe travels.

I'm sure you will be enjoying the fall colors on the parkway as you travel toward home. I was there today for a few hours and it was beautiful, not camping as planned though. Since DW hurt her back we have to be close to home for treatment for a while longer. I will not be on the south end of the BR parkway at the end of this week, as I told you above.

I just stumbled onto this thread. Looks like you are camping pretty close to my backyard. I don't know where you are at, but we like Loft Mtn. in the SNP. Great sunsets close to site A10A and hot showers ($). Just south of the SNP, go to Sherando Lake off of 664. You can probably find an electric site there, but the best site is A30 (no elect) but free hot showers (see photo). Further south we like Rocky Knob (mm165) and the Tuggles gap restaurant at Route 8 is good. Then camp at Julian Price- lots to see in the area (Lynn Cove Viaduct and Grandfather Mtn). Lynville Falls is good, but not the campground. At the Gem Meusium take the exit and then two left turns and eat at the restaurant with the view. Then Mt Pisgah Campground and their fabulous view Restaurant.

Last is Davidson River Campground by Brevard, lots of waterfalls in this area also. You may see Alan there.

Have fun traveling, Dan

I wish I knew you were so close by also! You were very close by and I would had loved to offer you some parking and a meal here in Baltimore. Dinoland would had gotten my vote too btw...

Deb,
We didn't have any problems with under passes/tunnels! (None that even made me nervous!)

Alan,
Maybe we'll have a chance to catch up on another trip. We didn't finish the Blue Ridge Parkway and plan to sometime.

I saw your "airstream sightings" post and wondered if you caught us... but I don't think so...

Hope your wife is feeling better soon!

Dan, Thanks for all that site advice! I'll keep this handy for our trip back to the parkway.

I thought it was quite a coincidence that we did stay at Loft Mountain- and very near A10. We were in A7, I think.

Ironically, we also stayed at the Davidson River Campground. We got off of the parkway just south of the Linville Falls Visitor's center. We met TwoBikes at the Davidson River Campground- it is a lovely area!

Staying warm in Florida.

We're not ready to be snow birds yet... but after having a chilly October in New England we sure have enjoyed our warm two weeks in Florida for November!

On the move again...

We spent yesterday evening at Florida Caverns State Park. We can't say we loved the campground but the caverns were very nice.

The CCC worked on the Florida Caverns in the 1930s to dig them out enough for tours.

They have a "touching rock!"

It still felt really odd to touch ANYTHING in a cave (for fear of damaging it.)

We only stayed the one night at Florida Caverns.
Today we moved over to Falling Water State Park, home to Florida's tallest waterfall.

"Falling Water" is a whopping 73 feet.

Does this make it the shortest tallest waterfall (by state)?
