On the road again!

Heading off to the Keys tomorrow. Very excited! Taking 8 days to make the drive with stops in Assateague, Charleston ( James Island ) and Jacksonville ( Kathryn Abbey ) Hoping for good weather and clear roads. We'll be spending 10 days at Bluewater. Then the 'stream goes into storage in Big Pine & we Autotrain it back home. Give us a wave if you see us along 95!

We live in a small town in Central Florida and had taken the auto train before with our car and loved it. I never thought about taking the travel trailer which of course would make being able to travel up north a lot more convenient not to mention the time savings! Just curious if you don't mind tell me, what did ti cost to transport your vehicle and travel trailer? Thanks!

We don't transport the trailer. That gets stored in Big Pine Key. No sense bringing it back to winterize if I'm going back in the spring. The AutoTrain ran us $640.00 for two people in a private cabin, oversize vehicle, dinner w/ wine and a continental breakfast.

Charleston

We've made it as far as James Island County Park. Very nice. Well run county park with alot of biking and about 15 minutes from both the plantations ( we went to Magnolia gardens ) and Charleston ( going in for dinner tonight ). Tomorrow we're off to Jacksonville ( Kathryn Abbey), as we continue to work our way to the Keys. Assateague was everything we'd heard. Very well run National Seashore and campgrounds. Right over the dunes to the beautiful beach. See you on the road!

Stayed at James Island County Park last winter - a great spot indeed, a very nice park and only a fifteen minute drive to downtown Charleston, one of my favourite US cities!

What do they charge for camping in the keys these days? We were going to go there a few years back, but every campground I checked was over $100 a night! Maybe I didn;t check the right ones!

I was told by someone that the reason for high prices is that over the years, many campgrounds have closed up with the land being used for condos, so it is a case of supply and demand - not many campgrounds available now.

Brian.

Prices

We're staying at Bluewater. As for prices, with the one night free for staying a week it worked out to $90 a night. We feel that while this is high compared to the $25 a night we're paying at the county park, it's all about location and amenities. I'm 9 miles from the Key West border. Close enough to party, but far enough away that I don't hear the noise. If you look at the reviews of Bluewater, you'll understand. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Fun in the sun.. with a word of advice.

Been at Bluewater for a few days. The sun came out & we're working on our third straight day of going to Bahia Honda and Ft Zachary for swimming. Great beaches (for the Keys ) both of them. Just a heads up to any of you folks considering heading down any time soon. Call ahead and make sure the pool is finished. They ripped up the entire concrete apron for a repair project that was supposed to be finished by the end of August. For a variety of reasons, they got pushed back. Now it doesn't look like it will be finished until Oct. There is still rebar everywhere. We didn't receive any word of this until an email got to me while we were already on the road. Otherwise, having a great time. I'd rather have no pool & the sun out than a beautiful pool & rain!
