Omaha Nebraska

Planning on going to Omaha Nebraska next summer in the last week of June thru the first week in July and was looking for recommendations for a good camping site close to the city. Does anyone have suggestions?

We are going to watch our granddaughter swim in the 2016 Olympic trials. And was hoping to. Find a campground not to far from the city.

Mahoney State Park is a bit West of the city but very nice. The SAC museum nearby is a must see. Good luck to your swimmer!!

Omaha area campgrounds

Welcome to Omaha. You'll love the Olympic Swimming venue at the CenturyLink Center in downtown Omaha.

The closest camping to downtown Omaha is at Bluffs Run Casino in Council Bluffs, IA, about 6 minutes away. I've never camped there, but have driven past the casino many times. The campground is basically an asphalt parking lot. Lake Manawa SP, an IA State Park, is about 20 minutes away and takes reservations. Unlike most of IA State Parks, the park's facilities are in need of updating and the grounds seem a bit "seedy".

Omaha is basically a 20 minute city meaning one can make it about anywhere in the city in 20 minutes. With this in mind, I'd recommend Haworth Park in Bellevue, NE and Walnut Creek Lake Recreation Area in Papillion, NE. The former takes reservations and the latter doesn't.

I hope this helps,

Jim

It does. Thanks Jim.
Looking forward to going to Omaha. We have never visited that area before.
But love going to new places. I guess that is why we have an Airstream.

Omaha sights: Henry Dorly Zoo (state of the art), Old Market area-fun restaurants, farmers market, also some very nice museums.

Omaha is a great city to visit. We've been through there five times in the last ten years or so and have always had a good time.

We stayed at Lake Manawa and found it was a convenient location. Most recently we stayed at N.P. Dodge Memorial Park (county) on the north side of Omaha. Manawa has water and electric hookups and a dump station. N.P. Dodge has only electric hookup with water and dump available in a central area.

Hope you enjoy your visit. We have visited the Lauritzen Botanical Garden, the Joselyn Art Museum, Durham Museum (in an old train station), the Union Pacific Railroad Museum and many other sites in the area. What's not to like?

The Allstays app for smartphone and tablets is a great way to find camping locations. There are several other places to camp near Omaha including the casino mentioned above and at least one other county park.
