We have camped in many of these. One of our favorite areas to camp. We heard about the rain too but think the issue is overblown. Mind you we live on Vancouver Island so we probably don't notice it.

We have actually never tried a weekend, but I have heard that it can be full on weekends even in the fall. I think you can reserve a site through the Washington State parks web site into September. After that they don't have reserved sites. It is a great location for exploring Fort Casey, Coupville and walking on the ferry to Port Townsend. We have enjoyed it many times.

We’ve hiked the trails at Ebey’s Landing and have enjoyed Coupeville and Penn Cove Mussels, so we’ll definitely add this to the list.

I drove the entire Oregon coast. On our return trip to Alaska, we came back into the US near Seattle and drove highway 101 all the way to Northern California. We spent 10 day driving from the Washington - Oregon state line to the Oregon - California state line. I do believe it was 338 miles and we took 10 days to stop and enjoy the sights, scenery, food and local specialty shops. If you can find any campground, which will more than likely be an Oregon state campground, that has water views, take it. Plan on hitting the road side pull-outs to stop and take in the awesome views. Sorry I can be more specific on which campground.

Virtually every reservable spot on the Peninsula is booked solid for summer weekends. Midweek spots are easier, and there are quite a few first come first serve sites.

It eases up a lot after school starts.

Here are some of our favorites:

Fort Flagler State Park (Port Townsend area)
Fort Worden State Park (Port Townsend)
Salt Creek County Park (Port Angeles area)
Dungeness County Park (Sequim area)
Dosewallips State Park (Hood Canal)
Point Hudson RV Park (Port Townsend)
Sol Duc (Olympic National Park)
Log Cabin Resort (Lake Crescent)
South Beach (Olympic National Park)
Kalaloch (Olympic National Park)
All are good. We specially like Dosewallips and Point Hudson. Add to the list the John Wayne park, Sequim, on the shores of the bay. Also check out the "recycled" RV park near the mouth of the Elwah River. Good park, well run, and great as a base for hikes up the river to see the river's recovery following the dam removals. We tour in a 30' AS Motorhome and have had no difficulty in any of the parks mentioned above. But DO GET RESERVATIONS. Safe travels into what is quite acurrately called "God's Country".

We usually stay in national and state parks, but the Little Creek Casino has hookups and a great location. Easy access to the interior of the peninsula, flat drive through sites with hookups. We are not "casino" people, but the casino itself was a lovely building with nice architecture, a great pool and the best fried oysters on this planet. We ended up eating them for dinner AND breakfast every day we were there. The tribe that owns the casino have a very nice museum nearby, which is well worth a visit. Give it a try.

Staysail RV Park, Oak Harbor, WA (Whidbey Island WA). Nice full hook up campground. Walk to the end of the campground and you'er looking at the Skagit Bay. Walking distance to almost every type of store/restaurant. We stayed here for a couple of days prior to heading to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station campground for a week.

Salt Creek Recreation Area just west of Port Angeles WA. Most sites over look the Straits of Juan De Fuca. Great place to watch the sun set and on a dark night you can see the lights of Victoria Canada across the strait. Water & Electric sites, with dump station.

Great choices! We've stayed many times at Point Hudson...hopefully their long range planning keeps it as marina/RV park.

How early do I need to reserve a spot there?

The last time we were at Rainier I made the reservation maybe a few weeks ahead of time and that was for late June. Some spots aren't to level and the dump station is too tight for my rig. Other than that, it's a pretty nice campground.

Olympic Peninsula

We were passing through Squim Wa several years ago during the lavender festival. No sites to be had. Stopped at the Community Church parking lot to come up with a plan when we struck up a conversation with someone at the Church. They allowed us to park there three nights. Was very close to downtown and we were pleasantly surprised to learn downtown Squim has very nice public bathrooms. Another favorite spot is the Hard Rain Cafe. This is the last place before entering the Ho Rain Forest National Park. The Hard Rain has maybe 10 sites with hook ups at a reasonable price and pretty good food to boot.

I would echo the list and comments from NWGetaways (esp: Ft Flagler SP, Kalaloch NP and Salt Creek County Park) and only add Klahowya a USFS spot just beyond Lake Crescent - it doesn't really have any hookups for RVs but is in a beautiful riverside setting.

I don't think Staysail takes reservation. Best check.

I'll bet that you have done more than 'some' backpacking too.
