Okefenokee

Any recommendations for where to stay as we head to the Okefenokee? (We are heading north, from Cape Canaveral, and our next stop is Charleston.).

Hoping to rest for the night, do a boat tour, then get back on the road without ever unhitching.

Thanks!

Eagle's Roost in Lake Park, Ga is ok but you would have to unhitched. The site is an old KOA just off I-75, four miles north of the Ga/Fl line. Sites are level, clean with full hookups. Only spent 1 night. I am sure some others will offer better options that will be closer.

I have been there twice. First time with the Bambi II (16). I did not unhitch. Stopped this past fall with the Safari 23. Had to unhitch this time. There looked to be some longer spots but they were occupied.

I must be thinking of another campground. There Is a KOA on the other side of the interstate, though.

Thanks for the input all... This took a while, since you can come at the swamp from any direction. I've settled on:

Okefenokee RV Park, 252 Bowery Lane (Homeland GA), Folkston, Georgia 31537 — http://www.okefenokeervpark.com — (912) 496-2220

I'll let you know how it works out!

This will sound dumb, but what is there to see and do in Okefenokee for a day or 2?

Beats me. I would give them a call if truly interested in a visit.

Stephen C. Foster State Park is very nice.
They have lots of boats inc. kayaks, canoes, and small boats w motors. You can tour the swamp. A very interesting place to wander through.

We won't be there till summer (when the bugs are HUGE BLOODSUCKING THINGS and the climate is as inhospitable as possible). I like to plan ahead.

One thing that works year round? The Okefenokee is one of the darkest places in the easter US, so if you like stars, roll on through:

This seems like a very nice park. We did an overnight there just before New Year's Day. We were lucky enough to get a walk up site, just after dark. It was definitely dark, not a light anywhere. We're going to put it on our list of parks to visit again. Seems to have a lot of things to do there besides camping.
