Ohio Rt. 7 vs. WV Rt. 2

We are taking off from Cincinnati tomorrow (Friday 7/10) for a couple of weeks in Pennsylvania.

On Day 1, we plan to stop near Wheeling, WV.

Keeping to my desire to take "decent" state highways and other non-Interstate roads, when possible, I plan to take Ohio Rt 32 (the Appalachian Highway) to Athens, OH, then US Rt. 50 to the Parkersburg, WV area. At that point, I will pick up Ohio Rt 7 which runs along the Ohio River, which, at that point, is the Ohio / West Virginia border.

Once we get to Marietta, OH, I have a choice of staying on Ohio Rt. 7 or cross the river and take WV Rt. 2. These two roads basically parallel each other, one on each side of the river.

Has anyone taken either of these roads? If so, do you prefer one over the other?

Any input and opinios are welcome

Dave

Take this for what it's worth. I went through that area about 10 years ago on Rt 7 in Ohio. It was a nice drive along the River. So I would only recommend Rt. 7. I remember the road because I was given a speeding citation along the drive in my company car.

I'd recommend Rt 7 on the Ohio side. It's a bit better especially when towing (fewer little towns and traffic lights). There's even some non-interstate 4 lane north of Wheeling.

How far north are you going before heading into Pa?

We are most likely going to Walmart it Friday night by the Cabela's off of I-70 in WV.

Saturday AM we head to Pittsburgh to go to the Kennywood amusement park (love those old wooden coasters!).

Sunday we head to Gettysburg, where we are staying at an Outdoor World RV Resort nearby.

Its been some time since I have been on either WV 2 or Oh 7. But yrs ago Ohio Rt 7 was mostly 4 lane ,and I think they were putting in a new 4 lane above East Liverpool that bypasses all the little towns just south of Youngstown. Someone from that area could correct me,I hope if I am wrong but I think the RT number is 15 .
Good Luck and enjoy your journey.
Roger
