Observatories -- US

Hello Fellow Airstreamers!

I'm looking for an observatory which allows the public to come in to "observe" space which we can visit during our upcoming trip to Albuquerque, NM. Does anyone know of any out West which would be within a day or two of Albuquerque? I briefly read of one which is located I think it said South of Tucson, AR, but that is more of a drive than I was hoping to get into. Are there any in Colorado?

Thanks so much.

Deb

How about Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff? I'm in Marfa now and will check out McDonald Observatory this week...

A search on observatories in New Mexico will give you a lot of choices.

I think we stopped at Mc Donalds Observatory Ft Davis Tx for an evening public program.

Since you have an interest in space, a visit to the Very Large Array west of Socorro, NM might be worthwhile.

I second the VLA. It's more of a day tour.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions. I did google observatories in US, and found that there is one in Albuquerque and one northwest of there, but as I didn't know anything about them, I was hoping someone might have been to several and had one in particular that they liked.

After reading through different ones, it seems they are not all alike, in that I think the telescopes (can't remember if that's what the large ones are called) are different sizes, I'm thinking the one in Albuquerque at UNM is around 14'.

I will check into all of the suggestions and we may just visit more than one, time permitting. I'm not familiar with the Very Large Array, west of Socorro, NM, but I'll check into that too -- sounds ominous!

McDonald Observatory, near Ft. Davis, TX, has a great website that shows the tours they offer.

Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ is about 350 miles west of Albuquerque, straight shot down I-40. They recently took the Clark telescope down for complete renovation but have a 16" available for public viewing. They also have public solar viewing during the daytime. Visit Lowell: Hours, Admission, & Closures | Lowell Observatory

VLA is definately worth a visit as is McDonald. You might also look into the National Solar Observatory at Sunspot, NM (Sacramento Peak) they don't have a public viewing program but is an interesting place to visit and kind of between the McDonald Observatory and Albuquerque.

Also in NM is Chaco Canyon which has a lot of ties to the solstice and star calendar. Also some very impressive Pueblo ruins. They have a a mini observatory and special star nights when astronomers lug large telescopes out to observe the night sky. If you check with the visitor center there, you can get info regarding these events. It's a rough road out there, but has some of the darkest skies around. Worth the trip.

Kit Peak, South of Tucson on the Tohono Odom Reservation. AS you travel there stop @ the trading post on the right while on the res. The gift shop in the back has some great local crafts as well as some wonderful silver items (don't ask me how I know). in addition you can have dinner at Kit Peak and they include the ability to use their telescope as part of the package.

MacDonald Observatory, in the Big Bend Country

Not to be missed. Big Bend is second only to Denali in CONUS.

I'll add another vote for McDonald.

McDonald Observatory | Visitor information, teacher workshops, public programs in Fort Davis, Texas

Also, just a few miles down the road is a great campground at Davis Mountains State Park.
