Looking for a campground reasonably close to the airport and sights. Thanks

I don't think there is much camping in or around Oakland. But I would try these websites for ideas.

Campgrounds and Camping Reservations - ReserveAmerica or Bay Area Back Pages: Family Camping

Good luck.

PS.

You might also want to send a PM to the Yhottys. I know they live in Oakland

Rodney,

We're not aware of any campgrounds in Oakland. We had to think about it, because, really, how often do we camp in our own backyard?

Were you just wanting to park the trailer for a night to meet your mother at the Airport? We were in Marin today, and there's Marin RV, about 25 minutes from the Oakland Airport, and across the San Rafael Bridge. But wait-there's a Walmart near the airport. Overnight parking perhaps? We can certainly drive by and confirm whether they allow overnight parking.

We wish we could offer courtesy parking, but we live in the Oakland foothills and the roads are narrow and winding. (Our 1961 Bambi is parked between our home and our neighbors'-ala RobertsonsRUs-everything else is parked in a storage lot.)

We hope this helps and please don't hesitate to PM or post if we can be of any additional assistance.

Its hard to fathom that there isnt RV camping around there. I would think as big of a tourist attraction would have that.

It would be a COLD DAY IN HELL before I would consider overnight camping at the WalMart near the Oakland Airport. Let's just say that there are quite a few "HO-TELS" out that way.

Or . . .

You could do what a Bambi owner did -

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f48/...tml#post795054

You could, say, drive into the City on a Saturday night, stay Sunday-we don't think parking meters are enforced or you could find a parking spot without any meters, and leave early Monday morning. If you park downtown, you could take a BART train to SFO or OAK (with a transfer to a shuttle). Really easy!

Also, we noticed quite a few motorhomes and trailers parked on the streets in Golden Gate Park. Still not too hard to get to the airport and picturesque surroundings. We love the Academy of Sciences, the de Young Museum and the Japanese Tea Garden. We think you and your mom might enjoy them.

And if you have a free afternoon and plan to be in the Fisherman's Wharf area, stop by for lunch on the Charming Gemma, our wooden boat, a 1937 Monterey Clipper. She's moored right across Jefferson Street-you can't miss her.

It looks like your California trip is on!

Rodney,

Lots of other places to stay outside of Oakland. Once you gather your loved ones from the airport get out of there and go someplace scenic to park your rig then drive back in to do your playing..

Yes, it's true. Camping is definitely not sanctioned, but locals park overnight in Golden Gate Park every night, and yes, definitely motorhomes and trailers. We saw them there just yesterday. 'Tis true.

Look in Pleasanton, Livermore or Dublin/Danville area. It's not a long drive to Oakland, and you can't even hear the gunfire from there. (LOL(kinda))
