NOT the Smokies in mid-Oct.: someplace neat near Atlanta?

Well, it looks like (for reasons too long to go into here) the Smokies in Mid Oct are out. But still, mid October we want to go somewhere. So I'd like to know if any of y'all have ideas for a place:

1. Less than a day's drive from Atlanta;
2. With good hiking (i.e., several different trails of 3 miles+);
3. With water and electric hookups;
4. Preferably--though not necessarily--in the mountains
5. Where there's enough to do for three or four days without getting in the car and going into town (though if it's close enough to walk to town, that would be cool).

We won't be able to do any driving at all--we'll be wherever that AS is anchored.

Fort Mountain State Park in GA. It is near the Cohutta Wilderness. It is very smokies like and has mountains up to about 3500 ft. There is Cloudland Canyon in NW GA. There is Fall Creek Falls in Middle, TN. There is Desoto State Park in NW Alabama which is close to Little River Canyon National Park. The hiking in the park is pretty bad but there is access to the upper Little River Canyon from the park.

Depending on which weekend in October, you could join us at:

Or, visit Vogel State Park.

check out Vogel State Park near Blairsville or Unicoi State Park near Helen, both are in the same general area of the northeast GA mountains

We love Cloudland Canyon State Park at Rising Fawn GA. It is just south of Chattanooga.
We go there a lot as it is the closest place to north Mississippi where you get the feeling you are really in the mountains.In fact we will be staying there a few nights in July on our way home from Townsend, TN. We like the west side campground the best. They have water and electric but no sewer. Really good hiking and the views are so pretty. Also, they make reservations for the park but not for a specific site so it is first come. For that reason we like to go on Sunday afternoon and we usually get the pic of the spots. I know they are very busy in October on the weekends.

Red River Gorge world biosphere park near Natural Bridges State Park here in Kentucky. Its in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Great hiking, camping and natural beauty. They have Zip lines if your interested. About a 7 hour scenic drive from Atlanta.

Ditto on Cloudland Canyon SP. It is gorgeous with beautiful hikes to some gorgeous waterfalls. I think you could find plenty there w/o going any where else.

Here are some photos of Cloudland Canyon in the fall. I never camped there but I have hiked. The network of trails is not really that big if you like to hike a lot.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We settled on Unicoi, where we have hiked often but never camped. But the other suggestions are now all on my list for the year.
