Northern Michigan find
I have never in my ... Years of camping seen this. Every site in this campground has a stack and I mean a serious stack of firewood ready to go. No gimmick - just a great spot. Healy Lake State Forest CG is its name and it is all of $13 per night. Kayaking and fishing and swimming are all in order here and boon docking is requisite. No hookups but the pit toilets are spotless and not like the ones that scare you off. Great find in N Michigan! 22 sites and other than the friendly host couple only one other site occupied. The first 19 to read this and show up will have no problem finding a spot. Gotta love it!

Wow! That is fantastic... I will put it on my list of adventures! My wife and I found a campground in the UP last year on our way back from the Porcupine Mountains that we loved. Large campsites with several places with open view of the water to Lake Michigan. I'm pretty sure it was Little Bay de Noc Campground.
Were the sites big enough to accommodate a 30' camper?

Awesome. We will keep both these sites in mind, as we will be taking our son up to the UP (Houghton) for college in August and are looking for nice places to camp after we drop him off.

Nilesrob, i am jealous. I was reading the other thread and I have now decided to try and convince all four of my daughters to go to Michigan Tech. The upper Peninsula is absolutely amazing, and fortunately it is darn near empty after Labor Day!

Thanks, Brad, I think you might have been the one that posted about Houghton City RV park. Great find. I will be on the UP for the months of August and September and booked a week in Houghton at that city park. Spoke to a really nice lady when I booked. Great find for $28 a night.
Thanks and good luck to your son,
KDS

We returned to the UP this past week for Michigan Tech homecoming. Colors were fabulous - what an amazing area! Note in one of the pictures you can see the Houghton City RV park - from the river. And of course our son in the MTU Pep Band - a very serious musical endeavor.

Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing them... We live in Grand Rapids, and love the UP. I've not been to this park yet but have heard much from others about how wonderful it is.

Oh WOW Brad!!!!! Thanks for the updated pictures of Houghton! What a great treat to be parked next to you and Karen this summer at the Houghton City RV Park. I am soooooooo jealous you get to be in the neck of the woods for the next 4 years!!!
Every morning the Houghton temp pops up on my computer. I will be going back next summer , I hope. It's a mere 1400 mile trip(one way). Piece of cake--haha
Seriously, thanks for posting those beautiful leaves. We are still warm and dry in Texas. I love being on this thread so I still feel like I am "in the loop" on Michigan.
Hope your son is loving Michigan Tech.
Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your hot water heater and did you get it fixed?

You probably heard my screams in Frederickburg from taking cold showers. After our return to the ATL, it was nothing a $150 service fee and a $2 fuse didn't cure.
Since it gets to be the time of year when campgrounds tend to close down, we stayed in the Hancock campground this time on the other side of the Portage. Not so shabby!

Looks beautiful. Is there good bike riding there? Is it close to Sleeping Dunes National Seashore?
