Northern California

My 25ft Airstream has been stored in Antioch, CA for the past 5 months and I'm eager to get out and dust off the cobwebs. I don't want to venture too far since it's been awhile since it's seen the light of day. I'm also only 2 years into Airstream camping, so I'm rusty on all the details that go with pulling and living out of a trailer. That being said, does anyone have any recommendations on where I should camp? I don't want to drive more than 2 hours from Antioch. It has to be good road conditions (no steep grades or switch backs). Scenic and electricity or full hook up.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Jackson Rancheria in Jackson, CA in the Sierra foothills has full hookups and nice views.

Casini Ranch near the coast has some full hookup sites.

An easy trial run would be over the Antioch bridge to Eddo's Marina (full hook ups, right on the river, or Brannon State Park (not sure about the hook ups).

We live in Lafayette, and did our first camping trip to Half Moon Bay (state campground, always full on weekends, pretty easy on weekdays, no hook ups)

Olema Campground also gets get referrals, but it's been 25 yrs since I was there (in a tent).

My wife and I own a small campground in knights ferry, ca. We are members of the nor cal airstream club, and own two airstreams. We offer to all airstream guests $10.00 per night camping. We have water electricity and dump station as well as some full hook ups. We are on the bank of the Stanislaus river in a small gold rush era town. We are within your 2 hour time frame. We are just off highway 120 heading towards Yosemite national park. You can send me a personal message for info if you are interested.

We went to Olema Campground last May. Point Reyes National Seashore is beautiful and the BBQ'd Oysters at the local restuarants can't be beat...or, buy you own locally and fix them at the campground.

I would take a look at Samuel P. Taylor State Park. It is well within your 2 hour travel limit, near Pt. Reyes, and beautiful, located in a thick redwood forest. Just be careful when you arrive to follow the signs within the park and don't drive into the tent only area (or you will have to back out because you can't turn around - I know from experience).

NorCal Destinations

We live in San Jose and have been out many times locally. If you're willing to stretch your two hour radius a bit, there's a flock of beautiful destinations along the coast. Here are places we've visited.

Half Moon Bay SP. Really nice, very close to the sand, grassy, level pads, no hookups, but a dump station. On a clear day you can see the Mavericks surf break. Miles of trails along the beach.
New Brighton SP. Beautiful! some hookups, large wooded sites right on a bluff overlooking the beach. Just south of Capitola and Santa Cruz.
Costanoa KOA. Full hookups, beautiful setting, right on the north boundary of Ana Nuevo. It's associated with a spa, so there's a really good restaurant on the grounds. Even though you have hookups, you'll want to check out the showers and restrooms; they're beautiful and have heated floors. Always toast warm.
Memorial Park and Butano SP. Both spectacular camp grounds in coastal redwood groves. Memorial does not allow ANY pets.
Marina Dunes in Marina near Ft Ord. Private and cramped, but not too bad; and you're a couple hundred yards from the surf. Full hookups.
Veteran's Memorial Park in Monterey. Unknown gem. No hookups, but free hot showers, flush toilets and a dump station. You're minutes away from Carmel, Pacific Grove and almost within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey; you can hear the seals barking where they're "in town."
Check out Calaveras Big Trees SP near Arnold. No explanation needed; simply breath taking scenery in giant sequoia groves. No hookups, but they have a dump station.
Finally, when it's not too cold, or snowing, try Yosemite Valley. This time of year, you don't typically need reservations and crowds are minimal. It's a great time to walk almost anywhere in the valley, the pathways and trails are pretty open. Upper Pines campground is the only one open in the valley to RVs this time of year.
On the north coast, Cassini Ranch on the Russian River has full hookups. Salt Point SP almost always has space available, but no dump station. Near Medocino, look into Pomo RV Resort. It's private, beautiful garden-like sites, very clean and well run. Full hookups.

Once you've tried some of these out, I'll send you some more ... enjoy

General camping area. not a five star resort, but a good family campground close to Yosemite for day trips. The town is only 98 people. Old time general store and a restaurant next door.

Fred, our 1989 fifth wheel with slide, in his spot in the campground. FYI we also have some small cabins available if needed for additional friends or family. We are airstream friendly!!!

Tmck, beautiful place you have there. We have family in the Cameron Park area and have driven through your area at least a few times. We usually stay in the immediate area of my family when we visit, but maybe we will swing by your way next time out.

Unfortunately, we are currently Airstreamless. Actively looking at the moment however. We would like to come out this summer around the 4th of July but haven't made any firm plans to date.

Small world. Exactly 50 miles from our door. We are there several times a year. Ever been to the flood museum? My wife takes her students there every spring. Amazing and humbling place to see.
