We live in San Jose and have been out many times locally. If you're willing to stretch your two hour radius a bit, there's a flock of beautiful destinations along the coast. Here are places we've visited.
Half Moon Bay SP. Really nice, very close to the sand, grassy, level pads, no hookups, but a dump station. On a clear day you can see the Mavericks surf break. Miles of trails along the beach.
New Brighton SP. Beautiful! some hookups, large wooded sites right on a bluff overlooking the beach. Just south of Capitola and Santa Cruz.
Costanoa KOA. Full hookups, beautiful setting, right on the north boundary of Ana Nuevo. It's associated with a spa, so there's a really good restaurant on the grounds. Even though you have hookups, you'll want to check out the showers and restrooms; they're beautiful and have heated floors. Always toast warm.
Memorial Park and
Butano SP. Both spectacular camp grounds in coastal redwood groves. Memorial does not allow ANY pets.
Marina Dunes in Marina near Ft Ord. Private and cramped, but not too bad; and you're a couple hundred yards from the surf. Full hookups.
Veteran's Memorial Park in Monterey. Unknown gem. No hookups, but free hot showers, flush toilets and a dump station. You're minutes away from Carmel, Pacific Grove and almost within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey; you can hear the seals barking where they're "in town."
Check out
Calaveras Big Trees SP near Arnold. No explanation needed; simply breath taking scenery in giant sequoia groves. No hookups, but they have a dump station.
Finally, when it's not too cold, or snowing, try Yosemite Valley. This time of year, you don't typically need reservations and crowds are minimal. It's a great time to walk almost anywhere in the valley, the pathways and trails are pretty open. Upper Pines campground is the only one open in the valley to RVs this time of year.
On the north coast,
Cassini Ranch on the Russian River has full hookups.
Salt Point SP almost always has space available, but no dump station. Near Medocino, look into
Pomo RV Resort. It's private, beautiful garden-like sites, very clean and well run. Full hookups.
Once you've tried some of these out, I'll send you some more
