Northeast USA, into Canada.. trip planning..

Hi Folks. Happy X-Mas Eve. And, I think this would be the equivalent of Boxing Day to those who celebrated Festivus yesterday.

Maybe I've had too much coffee this morning (my special smoothie mix of spinach, tangerines, almond butter, 2 shots of espresso, chocolate protein powder), but I'm all jazzed about planning a trip as follows..

Start in San Diego. Go cross country (route to be determined). Land in Newport Rhode Island at end of July for the Newport Folk Festival. While I'm there, figure I may as well head up to Maine (never been there), possibly Nova Scotia and New Brunswick (practically there already). And then ultimately, I want to go to Newfoundland. And then, figure some route back to San Diego.

Ideas, advice...all welcome. Just got this crazy idea today while buzzed on my espresso smoothie, so, haven't done any research yet. Can I assume there's a ferry to go back and forth to Newfoundland? And, being that it will be July/August, should I plan to make camping arrangements ahead of time due to it being peak season?

Gracias...

Now researching ferry to Newfoundland....traveling with the dogs...dogs are allowed, must stay in vehicle the entire time (6-8 hours), you can NOT visit your vehicle during the crossing, Prior to loading at the terminal your dogs must be leashed AND muzzled (really??). Not liking this....

Wait till you see how much it costs. As I remember over $200 ONE WAY.

I saw that. But then I saw the dog rules and those distracted me from the cost.

I guess we could drive around. I probably need more espresso to gather the energy to start investigating that idea. I feel like my bubble has been burst.

Ignore my posts. I'm an idiot. And I'm hyped on espresso. I'm back to realty now (consulted an actual map), and can see the problem!!

That would be a 100 mile bridge across treacherous waters.

Went to Newfoundland this summer. Went over and back on the 6 hour ferry. The dog owners were pretty much okay with it. You have the option of leaving them in the camper or of putting them in a dog carrier in a kennel on the boat. You can sit with them in the kennel. They charge by the foot for the total length of the rig. You need ferry reservations well in advance. There is also a long ferry (12 hours). Not good for dogs.
Nova Scotia is a good trip in itself. Arcadia and Maine are a good trip. Mt Washington and Vermont and NewHampshire are good.
Do it. The time you will need reservations is around the 4th of July. And maybe if you have some very specific spots in mind, like Seawall in Arcadia, for instance. Or you could find a place to leave your rig and just fly to St John's or and back.

Do you have a place to stay in Newport? I was an Irish Festival vender for 15 years there, always camped at Melville, but in last couple of years found a cute little RV park right in town.

Bill, thanks for the info.

SBB, no, do not have place to stay picked out. If you have name of the rv park in town, or others you'd recommend that'd be great.

We'd have the dogs with us, so would probably also have to find a convenient doggie day care place for them.

But otherwise, a nice convenient rv spot would be great!

Can't think of the name of the rv park in Newport but it books way in advance. Just a heads up. It is beautiful though.

We did a similar trip a couple of years ago. Left Washington early July heading across country up the east coast around Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and New Brunswick. From there we wandered down to the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway, headed west through Arizona and back north to Washington. If you have some time and don't get bored too easily you can read about it here. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...oad-79445.html

Prince Ed Island you can drive to. They have a very nice bridge there. You pay one way and if I recall ( 2 summers ago) it was just about $58 for our truck / trailer combination. Newfoundland, no drive to. PEI is a very nice destination, however, just in case you change your mind from Newfoundland.
