North to Great Slave Lake

Hello Everyone, We will be leaving this Friday the 8th for our summer trip, We intend to head north to Vegas - Salt Lake - Great Falls - Lethbridge - Calgary - Edmonton - Grand Praire - and hang a right up Hwy 35 to Great Slave Lake - turning west to 97 Summit Lake and onwards to the homestead in Goosebay Alaska with our return home in the fall. The question I have is I have not been back to Great Slave Lake since the mid 70's and can't seem to find out too much about road conditions up there this time of year? Have the mile post periodical, have been using these for years but the info on Hwy 35 is kinda hazy? Anyone been that way recently? Any info will be appreciated, If anyone else will be up our way we would love to meet up and say howdy. We will try to tune in when we can and send along some pics if possible. Paul & Linda

I have never made that circle trip but believe there should be no problem, after the end of May, on those roads.

Thanks Dave, Have been looking on Google maps and am super exited about getting on the road. Noticed that there is still a lot of single lane bridge over the rivers and streams on this loop route to Great Slave. First trip to Ak was in 66 when the Alcan was a single lane dirt strip and the pot holes were axle snappers! I was hoping that this route would be a trip down memory lane and have a touch of that trip in its remoteness. Thanks again for the info and happy motoring this summer. SHIVTIK

IN 2002 we drove to Yellowknife NWT and stayed in the Fred Henne Provincial Park Campground. Nice park, and near the airport.
It appears from the link below that the Mackenzie Hwy has more pavement than when we were there. At that time most of the road from Ft Providence to Yellowknife was dirt and gravel and winding. Blowing up the linked map shows more pavement. They were working on it when we were there having to blast thru the Canadian Shield rock to lay the roadbed. For the most part all the roads from High Level Alberta to Yellowknife were in good condition. We took a 51000 lb 2001 Class A SOB motorhome towing a 1999 Range Rover with no issue.

I envy anyone going that way. We went up through Alberta to the NWT years ago, what a great cruise! The road was not paved from Fort Providence to Yellowknife, so we held back. Watch out for those nasty deer fly critters!
