Yes, those outer sites are nice and big...we were there in August last year in the outer loop nearest the canyon...be prepared to do some serious leveling, though, especially in the outer ones that slope toward the canyon... While they are great sites, some of them are not very level. (But don't worry about falling into it...there are lots of tree's to stop you! ) Have fun...it's a great place to camp.

Here's our site, #33, from June '11, nice and wooded. I do recall site 16, 18 & 19 being stellar sites close to the canyon edge, watch your kids & pets!!

Worth the trip, enjoy!

Hi, we went to see the North Rim in October 2010. My brother told us about, the one and only, full hook-up camp ground, but it was closed. We found a nice Boon Docking site about half way into the Canyon. It cost me $17.00 for two nights. I didn't plan on this type of camping and didn't bring my generator. It was cold enough for us to have to run on our furnace, so two nights was all we could handle battery wise.

My experience with gov't reservation systems is that they are quirky and it takes a little while to figure them out. A lot of info is there, but it takes a while to figure out what is where and not all the info is accurate. They are really run by contractors who charge a lot for their services. Lengths are unrealistic and many times there is a lot more space in site than numbers indicate. But some older campgrounds have small spaces and narrow roads that make it difficult to back into. It is hard to know just what you are getting. I look for longer spaces because they may be easier to use. I have been at campgrounds where we had very little space for the truck and it felt exposed on a curve, but others were fine. Federal park campgrounds often have logs framing the site and they are hard to see when backing—go slow, get out often to look.

Basically, it can be a crap shoot.

But for the most part the places you are visiting are worth the worries about campsites and after you have figured out how to get into a space and park the tow vehicle, you have a comfy Airstream in the middle of beautiful places.

Colorado SP's use such a reservation system too. Many of the state parks are nice and have good campgrounds. Ridgway SP has many nice sites, but some are on a steep grade where you worry about rolling downhill until you end up in the water. Mancos SP has a bunch of campsites in one section that are unusable because of poor maintenance, steep grades and trees. So, you can't be sure unless you know the campground.

The North Rim is a great place to visit. We went there about 20 years ago and stayed in one of the two-unit cabins. I could hear the guy in the other room rustling his newspaper. We whispered when we wanted to talk to each other; a normal voice would mean talking to the people on the other side. An Airstream is much better.
