North Dakota's "Enchanted Highway"

Quite by accident my husband and I came across North Dakota's "Enchanted Highway"

Billed as "The World's Largest Metal Sculptures

Artist Gary Greff's dream was to help reinvigorate his hometown of Regent, ND.
Based on what farmers and ranchers were good at - welding, Gary helped them preserve a part of North Dakota's rural heritage one welding bead at a time.

The Enchanted Highway begins at Exit 72 on 1-94 near Gladstone, ND and travels 32 miles to Regent. Approximately every 4-5 miles you come across one of these giant sculptures!

Glad this made it to your to do list! North Dakota is so vast. We loved the enormous sweeping prairies.

Another must do in ND is to stay at Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan, ND
This was the last outpost for Custer and his 7th Cavalry Regiment. From there they rode to the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
The tour of barracks and of Custer's home by a costumed guide are not to be missed!

I grew up in ND

I grew up in ND. There isn't a lot to see, but the others not mentioned so far are:

The Garrison Dam, especially if you can get on a tour. Until the mid-60's, this was the largest earth filled dam in the world. The intake structure is 21 stories under water, to give you an idea. The control center is really interesting. For class trips we used to go on tours of under ground missile sites which were put in because they were afraid of the Russians bombing the dam. If the dam were taken out, the waters behind the dam would flood 100 hundred miles either side of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers all the way to New Orleans.

Medora - especially the site of Teddy Roosevelt's ranch. It's situated in the NH Bandlands, which are beautiful - kind of like a colorful miniature Grand Canyon.

The rest of the state is farm land, pasture, and fracking wells and it's mostly flat. They close the interstate highway in the winter when the weather is so cold that the time it takes your lungs to freeze (if outside) is less than the amount of time it takes to change a tire. Usually happens at about -40F or so. Not that anyone in their right mind wants to drive through in the winder, but just saying. . . . .

Medora, North Dakota

The "Pitch Fork Fondue" dinner theater in Medora is a great summer attraction. Besides the great steak dinner, the show, narrated by "Teddy Roosevelt " himself and featuring dozens of talented young performers is a patriotic masterpiece .

Sally Thank you for the info on the dam! We didn't know about it. I really liked your home state and
yes we explored ND's Roosevelt National Park's Badlands & Medora with its nightly, patriotic outdoor theatre extravaganza.
We also found gorgeous Catholic Churches!
