North American Foodie Caravan Ideas

Hi there.

Over in the Random Thoughts thread, conversation meandered in to a caravan idea. The idea is to experience the best local breakfast, lunch, dinner and libation in a US State, Mexican State or Canadian Province.

What suggestions do you have?

Agreed, Tom - but we're gonna need some specifics.

For example - friends of ours live in New Orleans and have taken us to some faves...there are just too many to choose from - but here's a few ideas:

Breakfast/Brunch: Commanders Palace or Brennan's (turtle soup at either, Bananas Foster at Brennan's is a must - or is that the dessert option?)

Lunch: Muffaletta at Napolean's

Dinner: dang - this is harder than I thought....hard to go wrong in NOLA!

Dessert: well, this really is hard. Cafe DuMonde for beignets and chicory coffee is a tourist magnet for very good reason....but those bananas foster - or Tee-Eva's pies (she's the Pie Lady of NOLA....).

Libation: a Sazerac is required. My personal favorite is at the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleon but I suggest trying them in every establishment :-)

I am almost disagreeing with my own thread....this could be impossible! But let's press forward 😄

Breakfast in New Orleans is Mother's. Not what you would expect but a must.

Desert in Morgan City La. is the bread pudding at Rita May's

If you're doing Louisiana, don't forget about Scott, the boudin and cracklings capital of the world. Lafayette, right next door, is great for dinner at Randol's.

Another idea I suggested on the other thread is a Diners, Drive-ins and Dives caravan.

Austin, TX. for a BBQ Marathon starting with a tailgate party at Franklin's at 8 a.m. waiting for the doors to open at 11 a.m. McKinney State Park would a great place to meet and go from there. A day trip to Cooper's in Llano, TX would be next. The Salt Lick, a Food Network favorite would make for a great afternoon starting with beer/wine in the garden. There are all sorts of possibilities.

Vancouver is such a foodie city.

Our Chinese restaurants are considered the "best" outside Hong Kong.

There is also a sushi bar on every corner. Tojo's is considered to be one of the "best."

Hi!
We are still somewhat newbies with only about 120 nights camping in our first year of Airstreaming. We have not yet attended a rally nor caravan. Not antisocial but rather enjoy the solitude of meandering into the mountains, desert, lakes and shores. However, we enjoy feasting and tasting new regional favors of the locations we visit. We are also sorta of obligated to share our tasting adventures with family chefs! In fact, they have recently sent us very detailed "hit lists" during a recent unplanned jaunt to NOLA which included many of the famous locations already mentioned here. We were encouraged to report back with selfies including Cafe DeMunde powder sugar smiling mugs, first bite shot of Muffulatos, well you get the point.

While the idea of caravaning to planned foodie finds in our Airstream sounds fun, in reality many locations may not have adequate parking....etc. for a crowd. On the other hand, I found myself daydreaming of an exceptional campground meeting place which would be large enough to accommodate 50 or so Airstreams plus additional parking for Food Trucks, Camping Vendors, Farm Market Style concessions for a "Meet and Eat" foodie event!

Start at one end of Beale St and work your way to the other. Also, I suggest Napa Valley wine with a lunch stop at Taylor's Automatic Refresher in Helena..
