Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

Welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us. You've found the right place for all things Airstream.

Some of the best views of the falls are in Canada. Bring your passports. Lots of State Parks in the finger lake area of Western NY to camp. I used to live in Buffalo but do not remember any good state parks with campsites close to Niagara Falls.

On the Canadian side we stayed in Niagra-on the -Lake last summer. Don't remember the CG name but it's a Good Same place. A short drive to the falls area and a nice CG. They have a large swimming pool area so if the weather's good the kids will have that. If it's your thing the Botanical Gardens are worth the stop. No charge except in their exhibit bldg. I think we were there on a Wed. and had a fireworks display and free concert on the lawn in front of the falls. You might check around and see if that's every week or perhaps a special event. Be prepared to be taxed to death but it's a great destination. Border crossing was uneventfull just have to deal with the traffic at the time.

Hope you have good weather and have a great time

We really liked the Niagara area, maybe because that's where we bought our first Airstream last August. Our first two nights in our new Airstream were spent in an amusement park campground in Grand Island, NY, about 5 miles from the falls, at $60 a night. We would never recommend that campground. We found campgrounds to be very pricey around Niagara Falls, but just down the road was the Cinderella Motel and Campsite that cost $20 a night for the first two nights with Passport America. Sites were shady with full hookups. Friendly owner.

(Cinderella Motel & Campsite at Grand Island, New York, United States)

We did not go to the Canadian side as the there was a 45 minute to one hour wait to cross back into the USA. We think the Maid of the Mist tour very reasonable and a "must-see".

Next time we go back, I want to spend more time checking out the Erie Canal and go to the home of Buffalo Wings.

Have fun,

Jim

We stayed at the KOA on Grand Island and were pleased enough with the facilities and the people. We also signed up for the combination tour(s) which covered both the US and Canadian side. It is a bit pricey, but we had never been before and got to see the best from both sides. I'd do it again - I thought it was worth it. Another benefit is that the tour goes though a special line to pass to the Can side, so the long wait is avoided.

Any recent visitors with advice?

Anyone been to Niagara Falls that can add to the advice above?

Our family is considering a visit this year and would love to hear any thoughts. We have an 8 year old and a 5 year old ... a destination campground is preferred for this trip ... it's a long drive and we would like a campground that's kid friendly so they can jump, swim, and play off some of that energy when we aren't touring the falls.

Marineland Canada - Camping

Being from Canada and have been to Niagara Falls hundreds of times...

Anyone of these camping sites will be top notch, the marineland is cool if you want to spend some time there , they have rides and petting zoo etc. and of course the whale show,

KOA is on Lundy's lane where everything is and they have shuttles to the main drag, lots of oddity museums and nightly stuff (casino) ...

Jellystone is a family place and close to everything but the furthest of the 3...

Best bet go with the KOA it's close to everything and offers great amenities

The view of the falls is many times better in Canada with lots of stuff to do, good walking shoes a must as you'll see so much more on the ground.

We've camped at Four Mile Creek State Park a number of times as it's only about an hour and half from our home. It was the destination for our first night of Airstream camping in 2003. It can get full on weekends, so you may want to reserve ahead.

Try to see the falls from both sides of the border if you can. It's a nice drive along the Niagara Parkway on the Canadian side from Fort Erie to Niagara on the Lake. The Niagara Falls Observation Tower is a good place to view the falls from Niagara Falls State Park on the US side.

The Niagara Power Project Power Vista is an interesting place to visit to find out about power generation on the US side of the river. You can also tour the Sir Adam Beck Generating Station on the Cdn side, although I've never taken that tour.

Lewiston, NY is just north of the most northern of the three border crossings and just about 15 minutes from Four Mile Creek State Park. You might be interested in visiting the Lewiston Art Park located there.

There are some nice pick-your-own places for blueberries (Russells) and cherries (Singers) along the south shore of Lake Ontario if you're there in the right season.

If you're crossing the border check the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission web site (or call 1-800-715-6722) for wait times. There are three crossings (4 if you have Nexus passes) and wait times can vary greatly among them.

Finally, about an hour and a half south-west of Niagara Falls is Letchworth State Park, also knows as the Grand Canyon of the East. You won't mistake it for the real Grand Canyon, but it is a beautiful location and a great place to camp with lots of hiking trails and river rafting. You can also tour the Mount Morris Dam, which was built to control flooding in Rochester New York.
