We've camped at
Four Mile Creek State Park a number of times as it's only about an hour and half from our home. It was the destination for our first night of Airstream camping in 2003. It can get full on weekends, so you may want to reserve ahead.
Try to see the falls from both sides of the border if you can. It's a nice drive along the Niagara Parkway on the Canadian side from Fort Erie to Niagara on the Lake. The
Niagara Falls Observation Tower is a good place to view the falls from Niagara Falls State Park on the US side.
The
Niagara Power Project Power Vista is an interesting place to visit to find out about power generation on the US side of the river. You can also tour the Sir
Adam Beck Generating Station on the Cdn side, although I've never taken that tour.
Lewiston, NY is just north of the most northern of the three border crossings and just about 15 minutes from Four Mile Creek State Park. You might be interested in visiting the
Lewiston Art Park located there.
There are some nice pick-your-own places for
blueberries (Russells) and
cherries (Singers) along the south shore of Lake Ontario if you're there in the right season.
If you're crossing the border check the
Niagara Falls Bridge Commission web site (or call 1-800-715-6722) for wait times. There are three crossings (4 if you have Nexus passes) and wait times can vary greatly among them.
Finally, about an hour and a half south-west of Niagara Falls is
Letchworth State Park, also knows as the Grand Canyon of the East. You won't mistake it for the real Grand Canyon, but it is a beautiful location and a great place to camp with lots of hiking trails and river rafting. You can also tour the
Mount Morris Dam, which was built to control flooding in Rochester New York.
