He forgot to add . . and at an angle from downwind.

Here's an item that's handier than mixing up soap solution:

CAMCO Propane Leak Detector Spray

Sounds like you need a sign like one I saw at a roadside fireworks stand:

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT SMOKING ANYWHERE NEAR THIS PLACE!

I doubt it would help with people that dumb. There are already the big, red-and-white, state-required signs all over the place, including one immediately beside the louvers that the person used to put out the cigarette.

'Course, maybe the person was just attempting suicide. And, lucky for me, failed.

Yeah, signs will only go so far.

Back "in the day" a long time ago, when I was flying fabric covered airplanes out of little grass strip country airports, one of the local FBOs was very emphatic about not smoking around his gas pumps.

(In those days I think a lot of FBOs had been pilots in WW II or Korea, had seen life and death up close and personal, and were not inclined toward subtlety. I know my flight instructor was like that, anyway. . .)

Anyway, in addition to a big CO2 fire extinguisher, he kept a pressurized water can extinguisher next to the pumps. And if he saw anybody with a lit cigarette there. . . he put it out with that extinguisher. Next time folks generally obeyed the sign.

On our way down to Florida last year, we used a couple of gas stations where people were gathered around the pumps smoking. We didn't stay long......
