Question New Orleans RV park

We will be visiting New Orleans next week for a couple of days before heading up to Michigan for several months. In researching the best spot to stay, for our needs, the French Quarter Resort looks good. Anyone actually stayed there recently?

I live close to New Orleans and I am a home health psych RN working all over New Orleans.

That being said, the ONLY places in New Orleans I would even CONSIDER staying at are the French Quarter Resort or at Pontchartrain Landing. However, I STILL would not stay at either. They are simply the least of many evils. New Orleans has consistently ranked at the top of the "murder capital of the country" lists as well as the WORLD.

DO NOT stay at ANY parks in New Orleans East off of Chef Menteur Highway. These are HORRIBLE drug and murder areas. Parc D'Orleans used to be a Good Sam Park...I don't see how. I wouldn't even stop and get gas in that area, let alone pull a trailer. There are SEVERAL in this area...AVOID THEM ALL.

Anyhoo, if you MUST stay IN New Orleans, then the French Quarter is the only one to consider. However, it is located a block or so away from some of the worst projects in the city that are in the process of being torn down. It is gated, however it IS located in one of the worst neighborhoods in the city. I would NOT venture out of the campground for walks or anything of the sort. Don't show up at night, and do NOT get lost. Don't ask for directions. Any by all means make sure your tow vehicle and trailer are up for the absolute worst roads you will EVER encounter in this country; New Orleans roads have some potholes 2 feet deep with no warnings; sections of pavement nearly a foot higher than other sections are COMMON. You can easily rip your car to shreds (I ripped the radiator support out of my Beetle on such pavement, bent a rim on a Geo Metro, broke the gas tank support on a Caravan, destroyed a tire in a Focus).

PLEASE be careful.

If I were you I would camp WELL outside of New Orleans (and no, the KOA in Kenner is NOT where you want to stay) and drive into the city.

And by "well outside" I mean at least 30 miles or so from any suburbs.

If you MUST stay closer to New Orleans but not right close to the French Quarter, I would probably choose Pontchartrain Landing. It IS in New Orleans East, but a little farther away from the drug, prostitution, and murder areas. However, this place too has many downfalls including high prices, ugly scenery, and unfriendly staff.

If you don't HAVE to stay in New Orleans...avoid them all and drive into the city.

BE CAREFUL.

We stayed at the Bayou Segnette State Park for 6 nights in early March. Very nice and safe CG.
http://www.crt.state.la.us/parks/ibyusegne.aspx

• $20/night with W/E/Dump, free wifi & laundry
• A 30 min. drive to the French Qtr., or a shorter 20 min drive to the ferry at Algiers Point and taking the ferry ($1.00 per).
• Take the streetcars to see the city. $6 per day for a pass entitles you to ride all buses on the transit system.

We just stayed at French Quarter three weeks ago. Very nice facility, very well kept, and very close to the French Quarter. Just be smart...walking the 4 blocks to the French Quarter is very safe during daylight hours, but I would take a cab at night. Well worth staying there...no need to panic.

So much for the Doomsday report.

Have stayed at the French Quarter Resort several times while traveling and it is a very nice spot, safe and secure. It is a couple of blocks from the French Quarter. Yes NOLA is a city with crime just like every other major city. You have to be aware of your surroundings. But we have never encountered any problems or 2' pot holes.

We have walked all over the French Quarter, and enjoyed the great food and coffee. There is no other place like it. Go out early have dinner and avoid the drunks on Bourbon St.

We stayed here

NEW ORLEANS

in 2011.

It used to be a KOA and has definitely seen better days, but we parked up for three nights and had no problems at all. Some of the permanent residents at the far end of the site looked a little shady but the bath house there was excellent, as was the swimming pool.

The folks in the office suggested we drive into the French Quarter and park in the lot just off Decatur street, which we did, and all was fine.

The campground has some mixed reviews and I'm not sure I'd exactly recommend it, but as I said, we had no issues at all. We ate at Bonnie C's in Slidell and that WAS good!

Hey JC
We were going to stay at the French Quarter rv park the weekend before St Patrick's day.
The quoated price for two nights was $285. Reserved a site at Bayou Segnette State Park instead, at about $25. per night.

Crime in New Orleans

Gosh, hate to disagree with you, but New Orleans is a bit unique in it's crime problems.....they have crime problems on steroids. There is nothing safe about New Orleans. They do have good food....but so do other cities which are much safer. We live a little over two hours from there and avoid it completely. Each to his own, but not enough reward for the risk. Dope, poverty, corruption, prostitution, rampant violent crime.....I mean what's not to like?

How I love New Orleans. I'm long over due for a trip down there. A friend of mine and his wife however were just down there about a month ago and stayed at Pontchartrain Landing with their 2 young kids and said it was ok and they'd go back there.

You usually give good advice on this forum, but on this topic you are wrong.

I LIVE here. I KNOW this place. I WORK in it every day. I KNOW what's dangerous here.

It is not responsible to state that French Quarter Resort is in "a very nice spot, safe and secure." It is NOT.

Just because nothing happened to YOU doesn't mean it's safe.

And, NOLA isn't just a a "city with crime just like every other major city." New Orleans is NOT like any other city with crime. It is RAMPANT, and it happens in BROAD DAYLIGHT, even to some of the city's most well known people and celebrities. The thugs here don't CARE who sees them. The judges just let them right back out; it is liberal mecca. Here are two local celebrities who were beaten by thugs:

Media Confidential: NOLA Radio: WWL’s Scott Paisant Robbed, Beaten

Veteran New Orleans musician left comatose by French Quarter beating | NOLA.com

Do NOT go bike riding in New Orleans. The newest trend is "The Knockout Game" where white people are targeted and not only punched, but now the Starbucks-loving bike riders are being beaten with BASEBALL BATS in broad daylight near the French Quarter:

Baseball bats are used to attack Esplanade Avenue bicyclists, New Orleans police say | NOLA.com

Knock-Out thugs driving crime-infested New Orleans, batty

Not only that, but TOURISTS are being ACTIVELY targeted in New Orleans in broad daylight, beaten, kidnapped, and raped:

Masked gunman tries to grab tourist near Magazine Street | wwltv.com New Orleans

French Quarter Resort is right next to the Iberville Projects, and also next to the famous St. Louis Cemetery #1. Thugs typically "hide" in this gated above-ground cemetery and "stalk" tourists on their way to the French Quarter. There are usually a few of them working together; they will usually box you in, then attack. Here is a quote from a couple who averted an attack in the French Quarter:

"My husband and I were walking on Royal St. after a night on the town and we happened to catch a guy who zigzaged across the street about 20 yds in front of us so he was walking toward and on the same side. I looked behind me another guy crossed over now walking behind us. Oh yeah.... the radar went beserk! I grabbed my keys put them inbetween my knuckles...getting ready, not knowing what was going to happen. My husband jerked me to the other side of the street as they closed in. Smart, totally smart on his part. The guys did know each other. They met and ended up walking together in the same direction. Crisis averted. You have to keep your wits about you. We've been to NOLA a million times together, year after year. just because you are familiar with an area does not mean it has not changed."

Oh, and here are some pictures of those 2' deep potholes that allegedly don't exist:

I don't mean to be so blunt, but do NOT listen to the apologists who state trite things such as "crime is bad everywhere" or "don't go out at night, watch your back and you'll be OK." New Orleans is NOT your typical city. The conventional wisdom of night vs. day does NOT apply anymore; the thugs recently shot up a SCHOOL BUS in normal daylight:

Gunmen Open Fire On School Bus | WDSU Home - WDSU Home

Remember, this is the type of city where if you shoot someone and it doesn't KILL them, the police will NOT charge you with attempted murder but "aggravated assault by shooting" to keep the crime stats down. It happens ALL the time. The place has been run by the extreme far-left (kinda like Detroit) for generations.

This is NOT the place you want to casually visit without listening to people who LIVE here and KNOW the place.

OK...rant off.

BE SAFE.

I hate to knock a part of our state but we live on the SouthWest side of Louisiana and I don't even go to New Orleans very often. I use to have to travel through there for business and always hated it. Job responsibilites changed and I was able to avoid it for nearly 15 years. Only recently did my wife and I go back and that was to the new NOLA Motorsport track last Jan. to have a little bit of fun with one of the cars. We stayed in Avondale.......not far from the SP mentioned in an earlier post..... steve

If you look for the worst, you WILL find the worst. If you look for the best, the worst MIGHT still find you. But the vast majority of visitors have no criminal encounters whatsoever.

Now you got my goat!

I did not say the FQ Resort was in a safe place.

If you read my post you will see I said that the FQ Resort is safe and secure. Nor did I say NOLA is a safe place. The OP asked about the FQ Resort. I presume that they are aware of the fact that it is located in New Orleans. They did not ask for the latest crime statistics. I don't deny that NO has lots of crime and problems. Northwest of Dauphine Street, northeast of Ursulines Avenue, north of St. Charles Avenue and south of Magazine Street are areas to avoid. Not every tourist is a victim. But if you go looking in the wrong places, the odds of it finding you will increase.

Some of those potholes looks like you need a fishing license.
We stayed at the Pontchartrain Landing on our last trip to NOLA. Would stay there again. The people running it were nice and they have a shuttle into town. Sites were nicely laid out. Not spacious but what did we expect in a city RV park. I would stay there again.
As far as safety we were not nighttime people in NO but as far as day time and early evening it was fine. Would like to return one day.

That's my story and I'm stickin to it. ENJOY NOLA if you decide to go.

I volunteered with a Red Cross Disaster team following Katrina. I was assigned to the closest kitchen to downtown. I was the "second shift", it was a couple of weeks after the flooding.

My job was taking meals out to the needy in the red cross trucks.

When I first arrived, a ban on serving downtown was still in place by the mayor. Some of our Red Cross trucks were escorted out of the city full of food by helicopters and threatened with arrest.

I was threatened with a ticket and towing for stopping my truck in a residential neighborhood. Other than the cop, I had the only running vehicle! Cop wanted a kickback. I gave him lunch.

Corruption was rampant.

With all that said, my wife and I are likely to sign up for next years Madi Gras Rally! The food was amazing.

Just think of New Orleans as a third-world country where the natives speak English (well, they sort-of do). Take the same precautions you would take on a trip to Mexico or points south, and you'll be fine.

Thanks for all the advice. Well aware of New Orleans, both the good and the bad. Just not familiar with this particular park. Ponchatrain landing was our second choise, but really wanted to be nearer the quarter for several reasons. Being more morning and afternoon types, we will be back to the park early. Also, being Passport America and Good Sam members, our two night rate would be reasonable, taking I to consideration no taxi and shuttle charges. Probably will reserve a couple nights next week. Considering I made it through a career in law enforcement in metro Detroit, I think we'll be okay for a couple days in New Orleans.

I don't doubt it for a minute. I was just poking fun at the city, like that oldie-but-goodie bumper sticker, "New Orleans. Third World and Proud of It."

I forget what the shuttle charge was but we thought it reasonable and it got us back at a comfortable time. At least for us that is. There is no nearby grocery store but the two that are the closest are pretty good for a downtown store. If you arrived stocked for the duration of your stay it would be best. Of course you could always dine downtown and nothing beats that.

Several years ago, we stayed at St. Bernard St. Park, which we enjoyed. About 18 miles out of French Quarter. We did not own an AS at that time so it was just two of us and A VW Eurovan Weekender.

The campground felt safe and they locked the front gate at a certain time. I don't know if it has come back since Katrina, but I guessing it has.

We made a mistake parking by Louis Armstrong park in downtown. Seemed safe. There were Mercedes, Porches, BMW's all around. We went for breakfast and came back to a pretty much cleaned out van! I believe the police station was about two blocks away too!

Luckily we were insured, and I'd still not hesitate to go to this great city anytime. I'd just be a little more careful where I park.
