What a bummer! I had to short circuit a vacation when my mother died and it was not easy driving from Washington, DC, to Clearwater. Hopefully your news is better. I have heard you have to fight for good rehab after a stroke because they give up, especially when someone is 97. I'm sure you'll be good advocates for him.

As fo hamburgers, there was another chain in NYC years ago called White Tower. It copied White Castle and it looks like everyone copied each other. The last photo in the Lima series has a house and there was a strange looking window in the middle of the front of the house. I blew up the photo and it is not a window, but a stained glass box that lights up—you can faintly see the conduit going to it for electricity.

Take it easy on the return trip. It can be hard to sleep at night worrying and driving while distracted and tired is not a good thing. I know you know that, but a reminder never hurts. I almost fell asleep driving back to Fla. Part way there, we found out a long time friend of Barb's had died back in Colorado. We were a mess by the time we got to Fla. (I'm not good following my own advice). Take as much time as you need even though you want to be there now.

Family first! Don't let your antlers droop. Stay alert on the drive back. Talk about all the fun things SueEllyn, you and her dad did through the years. Refresh those memories. O'l Fred and New Lucy will get you back safely. We pray for the best.

Take a break often on the way back and you may make better overall time. Be careful. Be sure to take care of yourselves, also. God be with you. Peace, jim

We finally got Fred's part yesterday afternoon. SuEllyn found it at the Chevrolet Dealer in Urbana, Ohio. We drove down to get it, and brought it to the dealer in Wapakoneta. They were ready for the part and put it in right away. That did the trick and Fred was up and running.

We got back to Lucy in Jackson Center at about 3:30. We got Lucy packed up and were on our way at 4:15.

We headed south on I-75. We covered about 400 miles by one o'clock this morning. We overnighted in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Lenoir City, Tennessee. We slept in a bit and are packing up to leave now.

We have another 500 or so miles to go. We should make it by tonight.

Brian

I want to say you are in my wife's thoughts and prayers. We found that these are difficult no matter how expected/unexpected. After reading all of your entries I feel like I know you.

All the best during this challenging time. Give yourself rest when tired and don't push hard. You want to get there.

We Made it Back to Jacksonville

Lucy pulled out of Lenoir City, Tennessee yesterday morning at about 10:00 AM. We continued south on I-75 through Chattanooga and into Georgia. At Chattanooga we considered taking I-40 east to I-26 to I-95 south. We opted to continue on I-75, through Atlanta, and on to I-10. Due to the time of day
(1:30 PM) we thought that Atlanta would be a piece of cake. This turned out not to be the case. We got through downtown Atlanta on the combined I-75/I-85 with out a hitch. South of Atlanta we hit a significant traffic jam that covered about 30 miles and delayed us about an hour.

The rest of the trip was uneventful, and we finally got on to I-10 right about the time that darkness fell. The final 60 miles into Jacksonville were covered in the dark

We arrived at the Hospice where SuEllyn's Dad is at about 9:30 last night. She got to spend some time with him. Even though he is not communicating with anyone, she felt better having spent that time with him. The Hospice doctors have told SuEllyn's brothers that her Dad has only a day or two left.

We got Lucy all set up in her usual camping spot in SuEllyn's Dad's yard.

I guess that this is the conclusion of Lucy's trip. We hope to get her back on the road in the near future.

I have included a few pictures from the road during the trip home. The last pictures are of Lucy, Fred, and Ethel settled in at their campsite in SuEllyn's Dad's yard in Jacksonville.

Talk to the old boy. Chances are good he can still hear if nothing else. The nurses said that hearing is the last sense to go. I went in to see my dad every day and played my mandolin for him. He never opened his eyes but I saw his left hand fingers moving when I played. He was also a player and he was playing along. That's how I knew that he was still there and glad that I was with him.
