New Jersey Shore Camping

I'm planning on a vacation to the Jersey shore this summer and looking for recommendations on great places to stay. I have three little ones (under age 5) and would like to either stay near the shoreline or close drive. Does anyone have a favorite place and why is it so? We have a 1967 22' Safari with no AC so shade is one consideration. We also like quiet places where lights go out early.

Thanks much!

I think the beach at Wildwood is the last free beach in Jersey, and it is a very large beach, 100 yards plus to the surf, . And there are things for the kids day and night. There are several campgrounds close to it.

There are 12 private campgrounds in the Cape May area. Cape May is a great little town, a lot smaller and quiter than Wildwood. Small boardwalk. The beach at Cape May is quite short from the boardwalk to the surf.

Jersey shore is a 10 plus mile run to the beaches and not much for the kids on site.

Its a little further south, but we loved Assateque Island National Seashore just south of Ocean City, Md. Last time I was there you could camp right behind the primary dune. Salt spreay in your morning coffee.

Indeed, being away from the chaos is part of its charm.

Jersey Shore

I would second the Jersey Shore Airstream park, great people very shady and quiet. It's a little ways from the shore but you avoid the traffic and crowds. We spent 3 days there in September and enjoyed is greatly, then we spent 2 nights at a KOA and they don't compare.

Still looking for camping right on the beach

Is there such a thing as camping right on the beach somewhere in NJ. A few years back a friend had mentioned somewhere but I cannot find it (and he has since passed).

This is Jersey. Everything is illegal in Jersey and if it isn't just mention it and they will outlaw it by noon.

Hello. Be sure to checkout the Cape May NJ to Lewes DE ferry. It is about a 1 1/2 hr ride and the kids would love it. You can take the trailer or just the TV. This is a good way to explore Cape May then hop the ferry to Lewes DE and come home by way of the other side of the bay.
Happy camping, nm1oqrz

Hello again. Assateque Island National Seashore is another great place. There is a herd of wild horses that roam though the campground. You camp on one side of the sand dunes and the ocean is on the other side. Another great place for kids. If your looking for shade this is not the place as it is wide open and hookups are very limited. But there is always an ocean breeze. Happy camping, nm1oqrz

We camp twice or three times a year at Ponderosa Campground in Avalon. We enjoy the beaches of Stone Harbor and Avalon most, and this campground is less than a ten minute drive to the beaches.

Camping in New Jersey | South Jersey Campground | NJ Campgrounds

We jet up to Ocean City for the boardwalk atmosphere at least one evening a Summer, but not more. We like the more quiet atmosphere of the lower beaches.

We did spend a Fall weekend in Cape May at Seashore Campsites which was a nice alternative. It was very quiet...but that was early October! The sites seem way too close for "in-season" camping!

Either way- you can't go wrong with the Jersey Shore for a nice Summer get away!
