I agree. I would love to see it when the inside gets done. Wonder if they will make bigger one, that one looks kinda small but then again I'm loving my 30'

I have always owned fiberglass trailers and I will say they may still be my favorite. If airstream ever made a fiberglass 25fb I would probably trade mine in.

Of course if Oliver ever made a wider body with separate bedroom that would be my dream trailer.

Looks a lot better than the Basecamp. That one looks like a small horse trailer to me. I fear that Airstream will over price the Nest driving some potential buyers to Oliver.

I will not judge before I see but I got a hard time imagining Airstream being able to match Oliver's quality and customizability (that a word?).

They will outdo Scamp, Casita and Escape in BC, specially cause Casita and Escape got rid of their smallest trailers.

But I doubt they'll outdo Oliver anytime soon. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised though!

It will be fun to watch. I think the fiberglass approach makes a lot of sense for a small / light trailer.

If you spend time in tents, *any* trailer is watertight by comparison

Indeed, there's a lot less in the way of seams on a full shell fiberglass approach. You still can mess up the doors and windows. Fiberglass flex is not your friend on that part of it. Of course *nobody* would make a trailer with a door that leaks ...

Actually my Casita door did leak haha.

But trust me I had way more peace of mind in that area with the fiberglass sandwich than I do with this lil seamstress.

In the Fans of the Nest thread I just linked, I think someone said that they had re-tooled the FRP molds and changed the design somewhat, as I recall. I have not compared the photos, but the new one in the yahoo article looks different I think.

Can't imagine Airstream is rolling out another totally new trailer with all the quality control issues on the Basecamp and many other recent models.

Thank you Peter, I will take a look over there. I have no doubt Airstream will improve the aesthetic design, they are very good at makin beautiful trailers which is somethin most manufacturers don't do. Yes, it is quality control that would concern me.

The axle recall (a major design issue), the leaks and most recently the refrigerator cooling issues reflect the birthing of the Basecamp a year too soon. It desperately needed real world testing in the summer heat of Arizona/California and more thorough water testing let alone QC folks that would actually reject the unit and have all issues fixed at the factory service center rather than relying on the mostly clueless dealer service departments.

The total lack of detailed QC permeates the entire production line and all models.

Makes one remember the 60s when the decision had to be made to buy only cars made on a Wednesday when most of the employees were on the job and not hung over.

I have spent a lot of time in a number of boats made of fiberglass. I can't remember any of them springing a leak and sinking while I was on them. I suspect I'd remember if they had.

As with any "plastic" process, getting the molds right is a really big deal with the fiberglass shell approach. Modern CAD can help, but there still is a lot of trial and error to work out all of the various "shrink" issues. From the pictures I see, they are still in the middle of that fun.

Taking them on the road to check for stress issues and other stuff is a much later step in the process. I'd love to think that they would put 50K miles running back and forth to Alaska on each of a few dozen of them before any are sold. My guess is that those days are long gone.

Attractive on one hand with that paint.

But disappointing aerodynamics. Lower edge and that hacked off rear. Upper radius probably not correct either. Drag is at the rear. Ability to handle crosswinds will be due to short OAL, not design.

For $35k a larger AS with some years on it would tow better. Aero matters far more than weight (as that is the Koolaid of the towable RV world).

This things a non-starter.

I don't know... it looks at least as aerodynaic as my 15' escape was and that thing towed like a dream. But I may be wrong, I ain't a physicist.



I think the design looks pretty good I'd be more concerned about QC and Airstream takin on too much at once.

You have hit that nail squarely on the head. It seems they had a heck of a time getting the Basecamp out the door. Hopefully, this introduction will be as smooth as the Nest's fiberglass skin.
