Neighbors hot over HP noise
New experience for us. Tenters in next campsite asked us to turn off the heat pump because it is keeping them awake at night. I know they are loud but I sleep right through the noise until there is loud banging at the trailer door.
This is a state park with good sized sites. Turned on the propane furnace to be a good neighbor.

Those things are loud. I hate ours and never use it.
For heat when plugged in we use a little portable electric heater. Completely silent to the outside world and does its job.

Really loud. I used ours once, haven't since for just that reason. We do the same thing, plug in a small ceramic heater.

Are there more spots open?

In many Parks, that doesn't matter. Noise is noise.

Who parked first?
As an Airstreamer my good taste and breeding should be obvious. Burp. But seriously folks, consideration is a good habit to have, both for the good of one's own conscience... and because the neighbor might just be packing a 9mm!
I agree, the furnace or a space heater is to be preferred whenever everyone else isn't hermetically sealed in a solid sided camper.

Yep, gotta side with the tent guy here. Sorry. We were at an Airstream rally recently, in a beautiful location, with mixed campers. The only noise I heard all weekend was the SOB in a SOB across the road from me, running his noisy heat pump. He never even came outside. I wanted to go over there and have words, but better judgement prevailed.
As others have said, the electric heaters serve the same purpose and make little to no noise. We like the oiled filled type. No noise, and they radiate even when they cycle off.

A gun fight seems a little over the top for a complaint about noise.
My only point is don't be the guy that moved into a neighborhood and then decided to complain about what was already going on before he arrived.
But a heat pump is not exactly a lawn mower engine powered gen set either.
I would estimate no one agrees to use an alternate device in the summer with the box on the roof is making the same amount of noise to make cold air.
Regards,
JD

FYI there is an ongoing murder trial in FL right now about loud music in a car. Shooter claims self defense. He says he complained about the noise and then had to shoot the kid to protect himself. Not expressing an opinion either way but pointing out that seemingly innocuous situations can escalate seriously.

Just my opinion on the noise, but I much prefer the gentle whirrrr sound of the heat pump to the furnace, which when the burner itself is actually on sounds like a 747 running up engines before takeoff.
But then again, I've never listened to either from the other side of a tent wall.

I'm with the tenter. The heatpump is really noisy, it's a little better on low speed. Be a good neighbor. That's one of the prime reasons I'm going solar so I can hang at the no hookup parks quietly without a genny (I know that't won't work for people that need A/C). BTW: if they used the 9MM then THEY'D be making the unwanted noise.

That's why tent campers usually have their own area. Call me a curmudgeon, but Ridgerunner paid for his site and if there in't a rule banning it, it is his right. I personally don't like kids screaming, music blaring, drunks yelling, racing mototcycles and ATVs, etc., so I camp where they are not, and I don't have to ask the rest of the world to cater to me.

Ridgerunner3 did the right thing. It's always good to extend a courtesy to your fellow campers. We were full-timers for six years and had a couple of similar experiences. A neighbor trying to entertain the whole park with his TV was the worst. For heat we relied primarily on our catalytic heater. No fan - no noise. Ran the cube heater and furnace during the day. Never had any heater on while sleeping.

We haven't used the heat pump for years, but I do remember it was very noisy, maybe noisier than the A/C for reasons I don't understand. We use the electric catalytic heater whenever possible and the furnace otherwise. I'll turn the furnace on when the temp goes below 50˚ inside. The furnace does make noise, but not the loud rattling noises of the heat pump when it starts up or stops.
Tents and RV's are mixed in some campgrounds and it doesn't always work well sometimes. I try to be considerate of others no matter who got there first. I remember how much I didn't like noisy RV'ers when we tent camped. When we make reservations at a public CG, I try to stay away from the tenters to avoid conflicts, but you can't always insure that. No need to look for problems.
Tenters tend to be younger, stay up late, have big bonfires and be noisy late into the night. In the early morning their kids with high pitched voices are no fun either.

In general, in those situations, everyone is using the A/C so it doesn't matter.
We were at a campground in Michigan back in 2009 with some tenters next door to us. In general the temperature was nice enough that we didn't need the A/C at night, but the one night we did need it. I felt bad for the noise, though they never said anything.

I have seen a few air conditioned tents, but not many.

The furnace is so much more efficient. Why use a heat pump u less you are afraid of propane or low on gas. Jim

The really annoying noise is a water heater going on and off during the night
