Need HELP. Ruidoso...Cooler weather.Someone??

Ok fellow Airstreamers, I can't stand the heat anymore. I got go where its Cool. I'm planning on going to the Ruidoso area with the Stream. Not really set on Ruidoso persay..Unless there is another place closer ,,,,,??? Wanna go this Labor day weekend. Gotta go on a weekend. Anyone have any ideas? I don't want an RV park. I would prefer a state park. Not worried about ameneties. Just want to build a fire, again and sit close to it.

It's 96 degrees here in Texas at 10:00 p.m!!!<Medic!!!!!>

I live in the DFW Messoplex and am looking for an 7-8 hour drive,I would love to drive WAYYY up in the mountains. I have a 4x4, if thats needed.

Can someone help. Someone who has been there already. Just point me in the right direction and I will do the rest.

Thanks,

Shane...

this oasis in the middle of NM gets my vote. drive up at night (cooler) and get up in the forest(s) you won't believe how nice it is there. I would warn you, however, that you may not want to leave...

Drove back from California last year and outside of Roswell is the Plain of St.Augustine.Lots of lava deposits and close to SETI.If you should go farther west there are the White Mountains that are nice. There were some park areas off road and even a dunes area that might be good.but it was certainly cooler.
When I drove to the Resto Rally in June I took 380 all the way to Roswell then N. to ABQ.
Left Decatur about 6am and arrived in Roswell about 2.

Be careful. The mountains of NM can be addictive for Texans in the summer. We came up here so often ... that we bought the place.

last week

12 hour drive to South Fork Colorado. Had a snow in the morning one day and had to wear a jacket every day in the AM.

Nice country, we've spent some great time in that area. A warning, however; if you get up into Cloudcroft and decide to cruise into Alamogordo, AVOID US-82 westbound!!!! There is a 4315' drop in elevation in 16 miles, which works out to a 5% grade for 16 miles, most are 6 and 7% grades. We saw numerous rigs on the side smoking, even ours with low gear and four-wheel disk brakes was smelling "that smell".

Ruidoso and Cloudcroft will be crowded Labor Day. Check out Oliver Lee State Park south of Alamogordo, near White Sands. You will need reservations for a holiday weekend. There is a federal undeveloped campground which was not crowded in Lincoln National Forest just outside of Lincoln. Lincoln is Billy the Kid country and a historical town. Also see the thread Cheap or Free in New Mexico.

RE: US 82 mentioned in above post. I never had a problem and it was a great drive.
