Need help getting home: NJ to Boston

Picking up my new trailer tomorrow and I need to find the easiest route Lakewood, NJ to Boston. We came down 95 today and it was a horror show. Took 10 hrs, many bad accidents, road construction closed the road, had to get on 15, getting onto the GW Bridge was crazy, divers were absolute crazy, one bad car fire....how am I going to get home with a brand new Airstream?!?! Help!!!

This is the route that in the know locals use to get to Beantown. check it out on a map. I nicknamed it " The Broosta Way " ( because it goes through Brewster )

Take the Tappan Zee. We made the same mistake from RI last year to Lakewood ,About 8 hours with GW bridge traffic. We head sourh next week and will take tappan zee as its smooth sailing. Take it slow and you will be fine.

Go pats

I would go parkway north to the Tappanzee Bridge and than 95 north. The Tappanzee bridge is the longer way compared to the GW, but the GW is a time thief. 95 north goes towards boston, than grab 93 or whatever you need. Best of luck!

Also pick your travel day/times wisely. This time of year weeknds should be fine and obviously early morning over the bridge is preferred.

Hey, good luck and congrats! This should be a happy time. Even if you hit traffic enjoy the trip!

Lakewood to Boston.

I travel to Phily from the Boston area, and last trip I detoured to Colonial on the way back.
Avoiding traffic generally means going nowhere near NYC, including the Tappan Zee (I had a bad experience going West on it, probably picked a bad traffic time). A relaxed, easy route, even if a few miles longer is my pick.

Take Rte 9 N to 195 E
195 E to 18 N This avoids a lot of traffic and stops on Rte 9 N
Rte 18 N to 287 N The southern part of 18 is divided highway
287 N to 87 N
87 N to 84 E Crossing the Hudson at Newburgh, not Tappan Zee
84 E to Mass Pike

Alt 1.You could take Rte 9 N to 18 N instead, if you prefer the slower pace and more lights.
Alt 2.You could take the Garden State N a short way to 195 E if you can stomach it.

We had to make an emergency exit from the Sawmill River Parkway enroute to the TappenZee Bridge as our Bambi was too tall for the 8'6" stone bridges. Check out Allstays.com and search "low clearance New Jersey locations". This site recommends staying OFF the parkways in general.

For me, it's not the traffic that you run into........BUT.........the SALT and corrosives on the road that WILL eat up the rivets on the underside of your trailer. It only takes a bit to get this action started and then it is a forever battle......If possible to wait until rain and such has washed the road really clean and then try to drive on dry roads.....Do what you need to do; but take this fact into consideration..........God bless........Dennis

I live in NJ and always wondered if it was legal to pull my airstream on the GS Parkway. I did some digging into the GS parkway rules and concluded that I couldn't, but some of you are advising it's ok. Can you point me to something that says it's ok to pull my 30ft FC on the GS Parkway.

Thanks.

I second this route offered by Mandolindave. Used to have responsibility for a number of tractor trailers moving product from the South East - GA up to Boston area and this is the route they would always us.

Garden State Parkway RV Restrictions - Bing

a call to them should be fairly painless.

I am very concerned about salt. Fortunately all roads were dry, but there was some obvious dried salt residue. I will clean it the best I can.

If it's any consolation, I saw the sign for Broosa and chuckled...
