Need a source for good road maps.

One would think it would be easy to find good old printed road maps online but there must be some conspiracy because I am at a loss.

I am using GPS, Garmin Bascamp, an a number of good technology solutions, but the old dog in my just has to see a large printed map and its like they have vanished.

The Rand McNally website is useless, you can't even get to maps by region, like the "Southwest" where did all of this go?

Anyone found really good road maps with the NP and SP type info? I have the Road Atlas, I just need a large map...

Thank you!

I googled "state road maps state websites". Seems every state has a web site where you can either download or order paper maps.
When on the road I always stop at the welcome stations and pick up a current state map.

Well I did not do very well with googling and I am trip planning so I am not near welcome centers.

I use Apple Maps to plan as I find it much more intuitive then Google Maps. Once I have a general route I develop a route in Garmin Basecamp, download it to my device and go. On the road we have a Rand McNally Road Atlas.

I'm surprised the thread did not get more activity, it looks like most people no longer use the old maps.

Ditto. I would suggest ordering your paper map online, as sometimes you get to Visitor Centers and they are out.

I also love the PocketEarth app, which works very well offline, and tracks your exact location in real time.

You can download individual states or cities, entire countries, etc..

I love it.

In Canada, CAA offices stock all of the major maps you would need for traveling NA. They are free with your membership. I assume that AAA does the same thing?

I do my basic route planing using the Good Sam route planner. I have a Rand McNally RV GPS that sinks to and down loads the Good Sam route. It can then be adjusted for any detours and real time traffic conditions. It is still nice to have paper maps to see the big picture. That is why I always stop at the welcome stations when traveling to get the most current editions. The folks at the WSs are usually pretty good with local knowledge about road construction and any touristy places worth stopping for. I like old timey mom and pop RV parks for quick overnight stops and have found several just by asking the folks at the WSs.

Great idea, I didn't think of that.

Maggie,

PocketEarth App looks great, not a paper map, but looks great. Thanks

Go to a Flying "J" or Pilot, or any other large truck stop, and you can usually buy a Road Atlas. I also believe that most book stores would have them, or can get them for you. Chris

We usually get our maps from Books-a-Million. They seem to have everything marked.

I use the Rand-McNally Road Atlas (available at any Walmart) and get state and city maps free at AAA. I rarely use GPS or any other electronic mapping systems.

Does AAA still provide (or sell now?) maps? Worth a look as they were great maps, which I also prefer personally. I will research later today.

Peter

PS edit sorry I missed earlier posts about AAA.

I have the Road Atlas, I'd like a map of NV, UT, AZ,CO as large scale as possible. The reason is I want to lay it out on my dinning room table an look at our route from Vegas to Denver all at once. The Road Atlas is great, but bits and pieces.

Anyone remember laying a map out on the hood of their car? I miss those days...
