Nebraska I-80 vs Kansas I-70?
We are heading to Rocky Mtn National Park in a week. In the past we have headed to Lincoln NE and went across on I-80. I am considering I-70 across Kansas this time. Can someone with experience on both highways tell me how I-70 in Kansas compares to I-80 in Nebraska? I like I-80 fairly well but it does add some driving time.

Hi
I-70 through eastern Colorado and Kansas is a very boring road. Straight / flat / boring. You get wind, but no more than on I-80. Once you get out of Denver, the next significant source of traffic / congestion is Kansas City. At that point you are essentially into Missouri.

I-70
If you plan a stop in western Kansas, you'll be in RMNP by 2 pm.
I've taken that road many times, it's condition was always pretty good. I only encountered wind once and boy, that was a doozy.
Clear sky, and my awning unfurled while driving.
Birds were flying 10' off the ground.
Next morning? Beautiful.

Another vote for Ks 36. And the plus here you will have the opportunity to be one of the 2 people to stop and visit the monument located in the geographical center of the continental USA. Now that's some bragging rights there. It's located just north of Lebanon, Ks. We are the other one that visited.

Another vote for 30 in Nebraska. Ole’s Big Game Lounge in Paxton shouldn’t be missed.

Take 36. First 300miles is Hannibal Missouri of Mark Twain Fame. The Mark Twain Cave CG, maybe. Next stop is Belleville KS. A local Rocky Pond Park or Kandy's RV park and CG are possibilities. Next stop is Strasburg, CO. The KOA there may work. Next stop is your destination. Good Luck. Pat

The best choice depends on your objectives. If you are trying to make good time, I would not go out of my way to take 80 instead of 70, and the section of 70 through the flint hills in Kansas is scenic rolling prairie. If you'd like to get off the interstate then I agree with others who suggested 36 though northern MO and KS--Frank

ABSOLUTELY! We love US36, great road in great condition with very little traffic. We have driven I80 and I70 but once we tried us36 we have stayed with it. We travel from central IL. To the Denver area at least twice a year.

Both I-70 and I-80 have good and bad points. Condition of both roads is good. Yes, 70 is more direct, but a portion is toll road, and at times traffic can be heavier. 80 is further with generally lighter traffic. Both have a good number of interesting and historic stops, and of course, rest areas. My suggestion: Take one westbound, and the other eastbound. Enjoy them both!

Bob, boring is a attitude. If you don't stop and see what is in Kansas and Nebraska and Penn., then anything can be considered boring. We like to travel less traveled roads in any state. As someone stated Highway 36 though northern Kansas is a great highway with not much traffic. It takes you into CO and near Boulder and then you can decided where and how to get to your Colorado destination.
I can give you some nice stops along 36 to stay and see. We also have courtesy parking around a half hour south of 36 and north of 70. Stay a day and we can show you around.

I have driven both I-80 and I-70 many times. They both have their positives and negatives. The one thing I do not like about I-70 in Kansas is the section that continues to be a toll road. Having said that I suggest avoiding both. I am with the people suggesting alternative routes that are not interstate highways. My experience is that the roads are in better condition, due to the lack of 18 wheelers, and the length of time to get from point A to point B is about the same. (I do not drive much over 60 mph when towing my AS. I also like the scenery of the secondary roads. There also seems to be plenty options when it is time to stop for the day.

There is a 23 mile stretch of I-80 being repaved near Pine Bluffs, WY. Not sure what delays there may be.

I vote for US 36. My wife and I have probably made in excess of 50 trips from OH to KS to her childhood home there. Through the years we always travelled I70 because it is the quickest. Now that quickest isn’t a consideration, we travel US 36 because there is much less traffic, the travel time is not so much longer and the journey is so much more relaxing. Our last trip was last week and we vowed that when we head for the Rockies in September with our AS, US 36 will be our route.

Hi
Boring is *good*. Steep descents, blind curves, lack of pavement, insane drivers and 5 mph in traffic are exciting ( = not boring). I've driven I-70 through Kansas dozens of times and stopped at a number of interesting places along it. Who would have thought there was a museum devoted to petrified shark's teeth .... The road it's self ... boring.

For me it's US 30 - the Lincoln Highway. The two lanes are my choice because I like the historical aspects of them , especially some of the restaurants and roadside attractions.

Has something changed? Last time I took I-70 it was a toll from KC to Lawrence, KS, about 50 miles. The toll was $2.50. If you drive 20 miles out of your way, you've exceeded $2.50 in extra gas.
Yes, I-70 is boring. I wanted to get to Colorado, not tour Kansas.
So, my goal was to put miles behind me. I'd zoom out on the GPS until I saw the entire state, and swear the little arrow never moved!
I'd feel so good when I'd hit Oakley, KS and stop for the night.
(I never found desirable campgrounds in eastern Colorado)

I take I-70. The little town of Ellis Kansas
midway between KC and Denver has a wonderful community RV Park.
