National Park Closures

Well, we just got back from a six day trip with the tin can.

We originally were going to spend 4 nights in Sequoia but at the last minute with the closures we had to scramble to find an alternative.

We ended up at the Mono View RV park just outside of Lee Vining on 395 in the Eastern Sierra. Not only was this a great little place but we we're able to get four sites together with sit down views of Mono Lake!

At $32 a night with hook ups, great bathrooms, showers and a friendly staff we all agreed we lucked out.

Tioga Pass was still open through the park to the west so we took a nice drive to Tenaya Lake and back. We we're told if we stopped anywhere along the way the Black Ops helicopters would swoop down and arrest us!

We toured Mono Lake, the ghost town of Bodie and Mammoth Lakes area. The weather was fantastic and we even met a nice couple from Quebec who had been kicked out of Yosemite with their 28' International.

All in all a great trip despite the closures.

Makes me wonder! Who all has found some great Private/State RV parks because of the closures? Making the best of a terrible situation has, I hope, been a boon to private operators on the edge of things.

We went to Waterton Lakes instead of Glacier NP recently-- where sequestration was already causing severe cut-backs of services, like shutting down campgrounds early.

Just heard on the news that the southern part of Utah is now an economic disaster area due to the shut-downs. The state will now be transfering money to keep the parks open.

In gateway communities the parks are not frills but essential to their tourism-based economy.

Don't know about BLM and USFS lands.

Folks, please keep your fingers off the Airforums keyboard for political topics. We do not necessarily want this thread to disappear, but it can and will if ... well, I'm sure you know exactly what follows the "if."

There is a great CG in Fries, VA near Galax called New River RV Park - very small, great owners. A great visit. We love Galax and the bike trail from Fries. (We met you guys at Alumalina)

Hi streamer. We had a great time at Alumalina! We were trying for the place at Fries, but he was full. He said he filled up as soon as the shut down started and recommended this place. Seems that the WBCCI Blue ridge Caravan stops here as well as the Fiddlers Convention Rally..

We are going to bike into the Fries place today and thank the owner and scout out a place for next time....

Happy trails, Pat and Al

Hi you two!

Don't know exactly where you are, but if you are anywhere near Floyd, VA, it is a great little town....especially on Friday nights, when there is live Bluegrass in the streets

Travel safe,

Maggie

We are a little south of Floyd at Galax Va, but we did hear the Whitetop Mountain Band at the Rex Theater last night. Had to hold Patty back..! She wants to join the geriatric cloggers...she is rocking the trayla as I type keeping time with spoons... Oh what have I started here..

Today's local paper reports that Missouri is looking at reopening the Gateway Arch here in STL and the Ozarks National Scenic Waterways area (Current River floats). No timetable at this point. I think they are trying to figure out where the funding will come from. I've gotten additional email from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources that the state park system is open. I'll be partaking of that next week down at Table Rock State Park in Branson.
