Natches Trace, Big Bend, Sedona

The bride (of 34 years) and I are going to hook up Shiny (2017 27FB Flying Cloud) in early January 2018 heading to warmer climates. We don't have time restraints and we don't really have an itinerary except Alumapalooza in Ohio in late May.

Many, many places we want to explore including Alaska via Montana after Alumapalooza.

After we leave from New Hampshire in January we will need to get somewhere warm to dewinterize Shiny. Then we want to boondock as much as possible.

We're thinking of heading south via the Naches Trace. Been reading some of the threads on that route. Very interesting. We'd like to see Big Bend in Texas and end up in the Sedona, AZ area to visit family before we have to head back east to Ohio.

Any hints, tips, must see places, places to avoid, boondocking spots along the way would be very much appreciated.

Larry

I'd recommend getting a Texas Park Pass, it'll pay for itself. We are concerned about the effects of the hurricane on La's and Tx's coast lines, hopefully things will be returning to normal by our departure. We head straight south to escape the cold then work our way west. Palmetto Island is a favorite of ours, eating oysters in Abbeyville, driving the back roads, can't wait.

NOTE - I'm not on the payroll for these folks, but I love the guides. They may be good for your travels, too::

Natchez Trace

You can't go wrong with any of the 3 campgrounds that are along the Trace. Meriwether Lewis near Hohenwald TN is probably the nicest one but they are all great if you enjoy quiet and of course free boondocking. We make it a point to visit all 3 campgrounds on our seasonal treks from Ontario to Texas. All offer flush toilets, but not showers. They all have potable water available as well. The Rangers that look after these sites are great and keep them neat and tidy. Fall is a great time to visit and usually not very busy. We'll be visiting them once again week of November 13th.
Hope to see you out there !!!!

We did the Trace on our Central South tour last November and agree with Walts0731, not to mention these three campgrounds are free!

We’re heading to Big Bend next week, so I’ll follow this thread for suggestions as well...

Walts0731 has good tips. M. Lewis is really nice. If you want a little more than dry camping along the way, Davy Crocket State Park in Lawrenceburg, TN is not far off the Trace. They are closing the upper campground in Nov. to rehab it but the lower campground will be open. A little farther down the Trace in the northeast part of MS is Tishomingo State Park. It is our favorite camping spot (headed up there in a few weeks). It is right off the Trace and has great hiking and canoeing if you are interested. In the spring and fall we meet lots of "snowbirds headed north or south depending on the season. A little farther down the Trace is Trace Lake State Park. It is about 8 miles west of the Trace, has full hookups. Tupelo, MS is close by so you can visit the Elvis Presley birth place and by all means visit the Car Museum it is well worth the time if you like cars.

Been to the Sedona area a few times and I know I have only scratched the surface. But If you like a hike check out West Oak Creek....the drive up Oak creek towards Flagstaff is great too.
