If you are looking for a place for a couple of extra nights, check out the Top of Georgia AS campground. It is near Helen which is touristy, but interesting. Anna Ruby falls is worth the short hike. Dahlonega is the home of the first gold rush in the US and is worth a look. I haven't been to the top of Brasstown Bald, but it is in the area and on our list of places to see.

I'm not a WBCCI member so when I check with Top of Georgia they said I could only visit one night. Would like to check it out for future longer term stays.
We did brasstwon bald, if you have walking problems they do have a golf cart transporter for an easy way up from the parking lot. Good museum and lookout.
Have seen the Anna Ruby billboards will check it out. thanks

Tallulah Gorge is nice, also Black Rock Mountain. The road going up to Black Rock is quite step I think they only allow up to 25' there. But still a good place to go see.

When we were in a van mh did Black Rock going up the back roads, I would be hesitant to take 25' up there, now that we will be towing a pu for side trips it will make it easier. While there we did see Foxfire artists colony, great site to see local artists and craftmen's product.

Dave, I missed the easy walking part of your first post. Anna Ruby Falls is about a mile hike both ways on a paved surface, but it is a constant grade up, then of course down on the return. As RLS said, Tallulah is nice, and the view from the rim is great without having to go up and down the 600 or so steps to the bottom.

There is a State Park & Lodge just a short distance from the Top of Georgia that has an outstanding buffet. A great place with reasonable prices. Check it out if you stop at the Top of Georgia.

Thanks Gaylejoe and Aviator, been there done that, exactly the kind of place we like .
We will be traveling from s. ga to n. ga and across the northern edge on our way to Hiawassee, doing it in our normal leisurely pace and as a bonus not having to pass thru Atlanta. A lot of US 1, 78, 17, 77, n.c 76 to ga 76.

Don't miss Brasstown Bald. That time of year will be great up there. Unicoi is great, Vogel SP is close by and has some of the best camping sites. In Dillard there is a famous restaurant called Dillard House. Fried Chicken is worth the stop.
There is a great general store in Helen called Betty’s(?) and a nice German bakery across the street. As for wineries, head toward Dahlonega and check out Wolf Mountain and Frogtown, both have nice tasting rooms and make a nice wine.
Don't bother with Top of Georgia. Do the drive by. Camping there is not worth the effort. Unicoi SP, Vogel SP, Brasstown Blad and Black Rock are worth the time.

If you are in Georgia for the first weekend of Georgia go to the John C. Cambell school of folk fall festival in Murphy N.C. It is over the Georgia border. It is not like your normal fall festival. You will see real artists who make wonderful hand made art work. They also have blue grass music stationed in different areas. It is very close to Brass town. I have not been for quiet a few years but it was one of our favorite place to go when the kids were small.
