Myrtle Beach or the Charleston area?
Hello,
We would like to travel to South Carolina (Myrtle Beach or the Charleston area?) in October. We are newbies in pulling a 30' Airstream into the United States. South Carolina would give us fairly rapid access back to Canada if my mother in law(now 87) needed our assistance.
May I ask for help in identifyng some good RV parks and testing our idea of longer term camping?
Our plan is to stay from
a) approximately October 16 to November 27
b) to leave our trailer on site or to store our trailer for December and most of January
c) to return on January 29 until March 26?
Any information and advice would be truly appreciated.
Regards

Charleston
You might want to consider James Island County Park in Charleston. It's a modern facility with full hookups and quite close to the city.
Charleston County Parks and Recreation
During the holiday season the park surrounding the campground is filled with larger than life lighted characters and other decorations ... there is a flock of neon flamingos right beside the campground ... and drive-thru tours are given. As a result there are many volunteer helper positions during the fall for setup and later to help with the special events.

Lets have a bit more info on what your interests are.
Myrtle Beach is a bit honky tonk and aimed at the golfers. I prefer Lakewood. Charleston is a great city but it is a city. James Island is close to Charleston and a nice park. Super Christmas display that starts in Nov.
If you are a bit more laid back and want the ultimate quiet state park you will have to make reservations for Edisto State park an hour south of Charleston. If you choose this approach act now and only accept a site on the beach. It may not be possible to get a site on the beach over any weekend this late.

We camp twice a year for a month or more in Charleston at the Oak Plantation Campground. They have one of the nicest parks in the South and is within a short drive of all of the wonderful places to see and eat in the Charleston area. We considered James Island county park but they do not have monthly rates nor do they have an onsite storage area like Oak Plantation. The link to their website is below. You will not be disappointed. The camping is first class and the Charleston area has plenty of activities to keep you busy for all of the time you are able to spend there.

South Carolina camping...
Hi Brian,
Last November we spent three weeks in the KOA in Myrtle Beach. We were there during Thanksgiving. The campground is set in a woodland off the highway and very quiet. It is within easy driving or walking for markets; large malls are nearby as are Home Depot, et.c, etc. The beach is a short three block walk away.
They do have a storage yard at the KOA. I know nothing about their fees for storage but do know that they have people who stay there long term.
We also were at the James Island County Park in Charleston in December and have to agree that the "light show" is a worthwhile experience. It was very nice and quite but busy. Reservations are a must in December.
Good luck to you...
Jim

Last summer after a week at Disney Fort Wilderness we headed north for a week at Myrtle Beach and stayed at Lakeview. Our family had an excellent time and was not overshadowed by the previous week.

Hi again Brian,
Yes; and there were lots of Canadians at the KOA that had come down in November. While I did not speak to all of them I did come to understand from those that I spoke to that many of them were there for the winter.
We found the place to be well run, neat and clean. And there was a modicum of security during the daylight hours checking passes on vehicles entering the camping area which is quite large. It got busy during the Thanksgiving weekend; they have a traditional Thanksgiving pot luck which gave us the opportunity to meet people; it was also nice not to have to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal yet be able to enjoy one. Lots of good food, the vast majority of which had been prepared in RV's.
Hope this helps...
Jim
