And she looks amazing in it... Each year, we take the last week of February or first week of March to escape the Michigan winter and head to Puerto Vallarta. Unfortunately, she does not like to fly (this is a gross understatement). After returning from our most recent vacation, she has asked me if we can avoid air travel for awhile. I will gladly oblige; I know we can find someplace warm on the coast (Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana) that is driveable. We just upgraded our Airstream this year so we'd love to spend more time in it!

But I need help... There are so many websites, but hard to decipher what is really a nice location vs. a poor choice. Here are some initial thoughts:

We have a 30' trailer.
We are young (mid-40's), healthy, and very adventurous!
We love outdoor sports (hiking, fishing, hunting, bicycling).
We'd love to be on the water, or have a great view but that's not a requirement.
We don't mind driving as far south as the Florida Keys (24 hour drive from Michigan).
We do not need much in the way of amenities, and love remote camping (in our 30' Airstream, ha!). Boondocking is fine...

Any thoughts from the greater wisdom of the forums members?

Thanks!

I always gravitate toward state parks or otherwise government run parks. I've never gone wrong with that although you rarely get full hookups. This is not a problem for us usually up to 4-5 day stay and we travel with small kids.

I just planned our trip through the southeastern states for this October / November and we're staying at all government run parks.

WineStream,

We have had great success with state parks in Michigan and I would love to follow your travels through the Southeast.

Thanks!

If you can move your trip ahead a few months you could join us at Disney for the rally in November.

WineStream,

If I did Disney, I'd have to bring all four of our daughters, right?

There are some great places along the ga/Carolina coast! In my area, there is a campground at Jekyll island...the campground is OK but the location (Jekyll island) is awesome! Blythe island regional park is a good one also. Skidaway island sp in savannah, crooked river sp in st. Mary's (cumberland island so ....by boat only, is worth the day trip from there)On the way down, look at stone mountain park near Atlanta, top of ga airstream park in Helen,ga

In Carolina myrtle beach, edisto beach sp, hunting island sp. More inland, there area a series of reservoirs on the south Carolina /ga border north of Augusta, gas. We stayed at modoc,sc corps of engineers campground.....awesome!

In florida, Anastasia so is just south of St augustine and on the water.

And by all means, if you pass by the ga coast give me a buzz, we can have a mini rally! I'll bring the beer!

Casey

The Florida Keys has the most tropical weather of any place in the U.S. The bigger islands on the key such as Big Pine and Sugerloaf are sparsely developed and have hiking and biking opportunities.
Get off of Highway one in the back country on a kayak and you are in a wilderness. There is flyfishing off the beach for bonefish and tarpon. I never caught many as this is an endeavor requiring local knowledge and lots of skill.
Unfortunately, there are very few state parks and the ones that are there are booked. Most of the desireable commercial campgrounds are usually full and require reservations. Everything is pricey. And, once you hit northern Florida, you are a day and a half from the keys. But if you like Puerta Vallarta, this is as close as it gets.

Here are two sites that i use to locate state and Federal camp sites. Thttp://www.stateparks.com Federal recreation, camping and tour reservation information - Recreation.gov. I also go to the states local DNR site for further information.

We love Padre island national seashore, on the gulf in Texas.

You can camp right on the beach. It is beautiful!

Good to see several votes for Texas... I had not considered it due to distance, but after mapping it, the distance is no further than the Keys for us... Great ideas!

Wow! There's a lot to choose from, and by far the closest geographically to us. I like the idea of a mini-rally, especially with beer! Casey, I will want to talk more with you as I narrow some of our choices.

Thanks!
