Southern Travel

To be honest, if you're wanting warmer climes in February, NC, SC, GA, AL MS all will be too cold for the wife and the bikini.
There's a really nice county park in West Central Florida. They do have electric, and water, but you will have to move trailer to empty the tanks. It's Fort DeSoto Park, and campsites are available right on the water.
Pinellas County, Florida, Park & Conservation Resources - Fort De Soto Park

If being waterfront isn't your biggest concern, in Central Florida, about 1 hour south of Orlando, is a really nice State Campground, Lake Kissimmee State Park. Welcome to Florida State Parks This park is VERY remote, but if you're wanting 'old Florida' it's the place to be. I'll say this, there aren't many things for the kids to do, but hiking and fishing, but it's a nice place. Believe they have water and electric as well, but again, you'll have to move to dump your tanks.

Your only problem is that a lot of Snowbirds feel the same way about Michigan winters and move south at the same time you're wanting to come south to camp.

Fort Desoto does have the ability of reserving your site online up to 6 months in advance. You can reserve in advance at Lake Kissimmee as well. Ocala National Forest, Ocala National Forest Campgrounds 1 hour north of Orlando has a lot of campgrounds, but even in February, it's so far north, that you can run the risk of some frigid evenings.

Just my .02.

Thanks, Derek

Okay, here's the teaser... Lots of good info on this thread!

Crazeevw, you're right about the snowbirds. I don't claim to be one of them yet, but there has to be a good way to combine the "no fly zone" with the "we should take an Airstream vacation" to the warm south without reuquiring crowds (unless they are other steamers)!

What I want is simple:

1. Warm weather
2. On the water
3. No crowds
4. Low cost
5. Remote

Sounds more like farmland in kansas with a duck pond than it does Florida, but some good keads, nonetheless!

Hibby

My mom was raised GR and I spent some good times with my grandparents at their place on the Thornaple river in Cascade.

Fort De Soto meets all the requirements except there is no guarantee that it will be very warm. It is remote yet close to St. Petersburg, probably the nicest big city I have ever been to.

For a guarantee of warm go to the keys- just tough to find a good place to camp, and it is a long way there.

I liked South Padre Island, Texas, too. RV Park right on the southern tip of the Island (Isla Blanca RV Park) just across the bridge from Port Isabel. It might be a bit commercial, but I liked it. Lots to do for all ages. There is a lot of SP and Federal SeaShore beaches, but I don't know about boondocking/camping rules in the vicinity.

As a South Texas resident I'd vote for Florida, first. Second would be a tour along the Gulf Coast maybe ending at South Padre. But I might more likely cut across to near Tucson in the winter time instead.

Kind of 4 out of 5 (Fort Desoto)

1. Warm weather - not guaranteed, but pretty good - further south helps
2. On the water - Oh yeah
3. No crowds - Really pretty good - not wally world
4. Low cost - Don't recall the price; not cheap but great value
5. Remote - You can really be remote even within the campground, and lots of place to be remote nearby.

Running/biking trails, kayaking, fishing - not so much hunting.
