The only one I remember being on that was worse than I-95 in South Carolina was I-40 in Arkansas.

I have actually had a sleeping passenger NOT wake up on I-20 in Bossier City/Shreveport...
The expansion joints are so bad that the vehicle gets airborne and sideways in a curve.
US 82 is about that bad here.

If you think I 95 is bad, try I 40 through Oklahoma City, Oklahoma!

we live about 5 miles from the SC border. when our road gets to NC, it goes from a two lane, line-painted paved road to dirt road. i hate driving in SC - all the roads are terrible.

Hey, don't complain too much. Our rough roads are the price we pay for generally having the lowest-cost fuel in the country! Be sure to refuel before you leave the state. That'll help pay for your worn shocks.

I thought it was to slow people down, especially the 90-95 mph tractor trailers

I moved to SC from TN this year. The SC gas is slightly cheaper than TN. The SC roads are generally in very poor condition. The taxes that a working person faces, other than fuel tax, are extremely high when compared to TN. Examples: annual registration and taxes on my Airstream are 16 times higher in SC, annual taxes for my pickup truck 7 times higher in SC, etc... . I think businesses like BMW, Michelin, GE, and Beneteau are in SC for the low corporate taxes. I feel the corporate taxes are low because the working people are paying for the low corporate taxes. No body appears to work on the roads.

I felt the need to rant about the taxes and roads in my new to me home state. I'll go back to sleep now.

Vehicle taxes in SC are very high but real estate taxes are generally low. Corporate taxes are kept low to attract businesses to SC which then provides employment. Without these businesses moving into SC we would all be picking cotton.

As bad as South Carolina's roads are--they can't hold a candle to the poor roads in Indiana. I passed through on Sunday and my fillings are still rattling.

Just stay off of the toll road in Northern Indiana and you will be fine.
